On August 15, Ghani fled the presidential palace, as the Taliban entered Kabul.
Afghanistan’s defense minister, General Bismillah Mohammadi, slammed Ghani at the time in a tweet, “They tied our hands behind our backs and sold the homeland, damn the rich man and his gang.”
Since then, tens of thousands of Afghans have fled and 13 U.S. troops and hundreds of Afghan civilians were killed in a suicide bombing at the Kabul airport. Many other Afghans have been murdered by the Taliban during the hasty U.S. military retreat and evacuation. Reactions to the Biden phone call have been mixed.
