Dr. Jones described the 138-mile-long Calaveras fault as running from San Juan Bautista in the South to San Ramon in the North.

“The Calaveras Fault is one that tends to have smaller earthquakes,” Jones said.

The National Weather Service’s Bay Area office reported shaking in its Monterey office.

Both BART and Caltrain briefly paused operations. And when the agencies resumed service, it was at reduced speeds.

Santa Cruz County said there were no significant reports of damage following the quake. The schools had no damage. And after a brief pause, classes safely resumed.

According to the USGS an aftershock was measured at 3.1 magnitude about five minutes after the earthquake.

Area has history of earthquakes

In 2014, a magnitude 6.0 jolted the Napa wine country.

It has been 33 years since the Loma Prieta earthquake.

On Oct. 17, 1989, the 6.9 magnitude quake struck in the Santa Cruz Mountains. It killed 62 deaths and wreaked havoc on San Francisco. And resulted in billions of dollars in property damages.
