Race continues to persist as an issue which Democrats view as monumentally impactful in the United States. Countless times, leftists have asserted that an individual's race determines their opportunities in life, the treatment they face in society, and much more. On Tuesday, former first lady Michelle Obama spoke about race in America during her time at the Obama Foundation Summit. Obama discussed past experiences that she and her family experienced; she also touched upon issues which she views as relevant in present times.

Reviewing Obama's Statements on Race in America

The former first lady shared her remarks at the Obama Foundation Summit with interviewer Isabel Wilkerson. While speaking with Wilkerson and to the audience, Obama stated that she and her family experienced "white flight" when they moved to the South side of Chicago. Following these remarks, the former first lady then declared that white Americans are "still running" from minority familes in present day. Obama's precise statements on these matters read as follows: "We were doing everything we were supposed to do – and better. When we moved in, white families moved out. I want to remind white folks that y’all were running from us...and you’re still running." Throughout her commentary, Obama also pointed out that she faced doubts about her academic potential. The former first lady noted being questioned on whether or not she could meet Princeton University standards or "make the grade." Finally, Michelle Obama shared her thoughts on fears which she believes white Americans harbor towards racial minorities: "I can’t make people not afraid of black people, I don’t know what’s going on. I can’t explain what’s happening in your head."

Playing the Race Card

Democrats and other members of the left-wing face repeated censure for constantly playing the race card in various scenarios. Critics of this decision have noted that racism does not exist at each and every corner. The current state of affairs in politics are largely responsible for current talks about division in America. Numerous conservatives and other right-wingers have pushed back against Democrats for the manners in which they choose to frame and address certain matters. Moreover, many Americans who don't fall into the Obama fan club are branding the former first lady's aforementioned statements as highly divisive.
