California’s Criminal and Financial Reforms

Let’s start with the Golden State, where lawmakers have introduced tighter gun-control restrictions, including mandatory informational booklets on the “dangers and justifications of gun ownership.” The law also allows the state to consider hate-motivated threats when issuing gun violence restraining orders. Meanwhile, criminals caught in widespread smash-and-grab robberies face tougher penalties.

On the financial front, California-regulated banks are prohibited from charging fees for immediate withdrawal denials. SB-1075 caps overdraft fees at $14 for credit union accounts, and SB-1144 mandates that online marketplaces (like Facebook Marketplace or eBay) begin gathering data on large third-party sellers—data that law enforcement can tap into to crack down on organized retail theft, starting this July.

“We want to empower small businesses while safeguarding consumers,” says Laura Griffin, a policy analyst at the California Department of Financial Protection. “This legislation will increase transparency without stifling commerce.”

Colorado’s Gun Storage and Cage-Free Eggs

Over in Colorado, a new law requires anyone leaving a handgun in an unattended vehicle to lock it in a hard-sided container, hidden from plain sight. Beginning in July, concealed-carry applicants must complete an eight-hour training course.

But Colorado isn’t just about firearms. All eggs sold in the state must now come from cage-free facilities, a move driven by animal welfare groups demanding more humane conditions for hens.

New Hampshire’s Second Amendment Emphasis

Unlike California, the Granite State has taken a different approach by strengthening Second Amendment rights. Starting January 1, New Hampshire outlaws the use of certain merchant category codes that monitor gun purchases, a measure supported by the NRA. The state will also enforce tighter bail reform policies, holding specific criminal suspects in custody for longer periods.

“We believe responsible gun owners should not be penalized through backdoor methods,” Mark Townsend, an NRA spokesperson, told local media. “New Hampshire is leading the way on privacy protections.”

Oregon’s Expanding Legislation

Oregon has added the use or possession of illegal drugs on public transportation to its interference charges—so if you’re riding the bus and breaking drug laws, you’re at risk of additional penalties. Lawmakers also passed House Bill 4145, creating new offenses for inciting aggravated animal mistreatment and tightening the legal definitions around animal abuse.
Oregon schools can now use stop-arm cameras to catch drivers who don’t stop for school buses, thanks to House Bill 4147. Another noteworthy measure, Senate Bill 1532, requires the Department of Education to address “academic gaps” for asylum-seeking, refugee, or undocumented students.

Washington’s Crackdown on Careless Driving and Animal Testing

Up north in Washington, if a careless driver kills a pedestrian or cyclist, they can be charged with a severe misdemeanor, facing up to 364 days in jail. Additionally, cosmetics tested on animals can no longer be sold, barring a few exceptions for products tested outside the United States due to foreign regulations. Strip club employees also must undergo training to curb sexual harassment and human trafficking.

Illinois: Juvenile Justice and Easy Gym Membership Cancellations

Illinois is expediting the clearance process for juvenile criminal records—a move hailed by community leaders who believe in second chances. Police officers are mandated to complete autism sensitivity training, and a new law requires gyms to offer simple online cancellations. No more dreaded in-person cancellations for memberships you never use!

Missouri: Expungements and a Hands-Free Driving Law

Missouri is renewing a 2012 felony expungement law, giving individuals a chance to erase past mistakes. The “Siddens Bening Hands-Free Law” also kicks in, making it illegal to use cell phones while driving. Fines range from $150 for the first offense to $500 for the third. Missouri’s minimum wage rises to $13.75, reflecting the broader trend of wage hikes across the country.

Minnesota: New Cannabis Stores and Stricter Gun Laws

Minnesota will allow six new cannabis stores in St. Cloud starting January 1. Interestingly, the state also enacts harsher gun regulations, banning “binary triggers” that allow firearms to shoot faster.

Wisconsin: Year-Round Park Stickers and EV Taxes

Wisconsin now grants state park entry stickers valid for a full year from the date of purchase rather than just the calendar year. Electric vehicle owners face a new excise tax of 3 cents per kilowatt-hour—though home charging stations get a pass. The state’s “ABLE” program also launches, allowing individuals with disabilities to save for essentials like housing and transportation without jeopardizing benefits.

Florida: Social Media Age Restrictions

One of the most talked-about laws is Florida’s ban on social media use for anyone under 14. Tech companies must delete accounts under suspicion, and older teens (14 or 15) have 90 days to provide parental consent. Websites hosting adult content must implement age-verification or face hefty fines.

Tennessee: Protecting Kids Online and Farmland from Foreign Acquisition

Tennessee’s “Protecting Kids on Social Media Act” goes live in January, requiring social media providers to verify a user’s age. Additionally, citizens from certain countries (including China and North Korea) are prohibited from owning agricultural land. Alcohol servers must undergo new training to curb date-rape drugging and understand how substances contribute to sexual assault.

Texas: Dropping Vehicle Inspections

Texans can rejoice (or lament, depending on your safety perspective) as the state eliminates mandatory safety inspections for noncommercial vehicles, replacing them with a $7.50 fee at registration. However, emission tests remain compulsory in metro areas like Dallas-Fort Worth and Houston to meet federal clean-air standards.

Pennsylvania: Pet Protection in Domestic Abuse Cases

Pennsylvania joins over 35 other states in protecting pets from domestic abusers. Judges can bar defendants from possessing or harming a victim’s pet once a protective order is in place. That law takes effect on January 17, 2025.

Connecticut: Wage Increases, Sick Leave Expansion, and Forced Debt Relief

Connecticut’s minimum wage rises from $15.69 to $16.35, aligning with Public Act No. 19-4 from 2019. Expanded paid sick leave (Public Act No. 24-8) also goes into effect, granting more workers the ability to take paid time off for personal or family illnesses. Meanwhile, Public Act No. 24-77 addresses “compelled debt,” pausing collections for alleged victims of domestic abuse while claims are investigated.

Vermont: Annual Minimum Wage Bump and Equal Pay Transparency

By state law, Vermont’s minimum wage automatically ticks up from $13.67 to $14.01, a 2.5% increase. Act 95 ensures that colorectal cancer screening remains covered by health insurance, while Act 155 demands salary ranges be included in most written job postings, supporting pay transparency.
