Peace talks between Ukraine and Russia are set to resume in Istanbul, Turkey, following a turbulent week of heightened military action and deepening hostility.

While the previous round of negotiations yielded the largest prisoner swap of the war, it failed to generate any real progress toward ending the conflict.

New Round of Peace Talks in Istanbul

After days of uncertainty, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy confirmed that Defense Minister Rustem Umerov will lead Ukraine's delegation at the second round of direct peace talks. They are scheduled for Monday in Istanbul. The announcement follows growing international pressure to find a diplomatic resolution, though hopes remain tempered.

“We are prepared to engage in dialogue, but not at the expense of our sovereignty,” said Zelenskiy in a televised statement.

“Ukraine will negotiate, but we will not surrender.”

Despite the positive gesture of the first round’s prisoner exchange, both sides appear entrenched. Russia continues to press military advantages, while Ukraine defends its territory with increasing aggression.

Escalating Violence Overshadows Diplomacy

The renewed talks come in the wake of dramatic developments on the battlefield. Over the weekend, a massive drone battle unfolded, with both sides deploying dozens of unmanned aerial vehicles.

Most notably, Ukrainian forces launched a long-range attack deep into Siberia targeting nuclear-capable bombers. This escalation underscores the high stakes of the warring nations.

Additionally, a highway bridge in Russia’s Bryansk region collapsed over a passenger train after what Russian officials called a sabotage act.

Video from the scene showed mangled train cars and twisted metal, intensifying security fears within Russia.

According to CBC News, Western intelligence sources believe the strategic attacks are meant to pressure Russia into serious negotiations — but may instead harden Moscow’s resolve.

Russian Passports in Occupied Ukraine

In the middle of the military drama and diplomatic maneuvering, Russia is continuing to distribute Russian passports in occupied Ukrainian territories. This tactic is viewed by many as a move to consolidate control and further complicate peace efforts.

As reported by CBC, tens of thousands of Ukrainians have been issued Russian documents — often under coercive conditions.

“They gave us no choice. Either take the passport or lose your job, your benefits,” said one resident from the Zaporizhzhia region.
“It’s a silent occupation.”
