Cadillac Names Inaugural Formula 1 Car MAC-26 in Tribute to Mario Andretti Ahead of 2026 Australian Grand Prix Debut

Cadillac has officially revealed the name of its first Formula 1 challenger, confirming that its 2026 car will be called the MAC-26 — a tribute to American racing icon Mario Andretti. The announcement arrives just days before Andretti’s 86th birthday and shortly ahead of the team’s competitive debut at the season-opening Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne.

The naming marks a symbolic moment not only for Cadillac but also for American motorsport. Andretti remains the last American driver to win the Formula 1 World Championship, and his legacy continues to loom large in the sport. By incorporating his initials into the car’s designation — Mario Andretti Cadillac 2026 — the team signals both respect for history and ambition for the future.

The 2026 season represents Cadillac’s official arrival as Formula 1’s newest entrant, expanding the grid to 11 teams. Backed by General Motors, the American manufacturer has spent years working toward this moment, navigating regulatory hurdles and organizational restructuring before securing its place on the grid.

Team CEO Dan Towriss described the MAC-26 name as a reflection of Andretti’s pioneering spirit and the broader belief that an American works team belongs at the pinnacle of global motorsport. The team hopes the tribute will resonate with fans on both sides of the Atlantic as it begins its competitive journey.

Andretti, who serves as an ambassador and board member for the project, called the gesture deeply meaningful. He described it as an honor to have his career recognized in such a visible way and expressed appreciation for the opportunity to remain connected to Formula 1’s evolving story.

From Rejection to Reality

Cadillac’s road to Formula 1 was far from straightforward. The initial bid to enter the championship began under the Andretti Global banner, spearheaded by Mario’s son, Michael Andretti. However, the proposal faced resistance from existing teams and commercial stakeholders.

After months of negotiations and restructuring, leadership adjustments were made and the project was reintroduced with stronger backing from General Motors. Through the uncertainty, Mario Andretti remained publicly supportive, advocating for an American presence in Formula 1.

That persistence ultimately paid off, culminating in the green light for Cadillac’s 2026 entry.

Leadership and Vision

Team principal Graeme Lowdon has emphasized the personal significance of carrying Andretti’s name on the car. He described Andretti not only as a racing legend but also as a mentor figure whose competitive mindset continues to inspire the team’s culture.

Lowdon has previously spoken about Andretti’s early encouragement during the team’s formation stages, noting that the racing legend asked him not to let the project fall short of its ambitions.

With the MAC-26 now officially unveiled, that ambition is set to be tested on track.

Driver Lineup and Technical Package

Cadillac has assembled an experienced driver pairing for its debut season. Mexican veteran Sergio Perez and Finnish race winner Valtteri Bottas will pilot the MAC-26 in its first campaign.

Both drivers bring years of Formula 1 experience, including podium finishes and championship-contending seasons with established teams. Their familiarity with race strategy, tire management and technical development is expected to be crucial as Cadillac builds its performance foundation.

The car will be powered by a Ferrari-supplied engine, providing a competitive and proven power unit for the team’s inaugural season. Such partnerships are common for new entrants as they develop long-term in-house capabilities.

During pre-season testing, the team completed nearly 4,000 kilometers of running, focusing on reliability, aerodynamic correlation and race simulations. While testing times are often difficult to interpret, the mileage suggests the program has reached a solid operational baseline ahead of Melbourne.

A Distinctive Naming Tradition

In a sport where chassis names often follow alphanumeric corporate codes, Cadillac’s decision to honor a living racing legend stands out. While teams like Red Bull, Ferrari and Mercedes typically rely on technical naming sequences, the MAC-26 carries emotional and historical weight.

The tribute also reinforces Cadillac’s positioning as a proudly American team entering a traditionally European-dominated championship. By linking its identity to Andretti, the team underscores its national heritage while competing on a global stage.

Expectations for the 2026 Season

As the lights prepare to go out at Albert Park in Melbourne, questions naturally surround Cadillac’s competitiveness. New teams historically face steep learning curves, from operational logistics to race-weekend execution under pressure.

However, the combination of experienced drivers, established engine supply and corporate backing provides reasons for cautious optimism. The 2026 regulations also usher in a new technical era for Formula 1, potentially narrowing gaps between established teams and newcomers.

For American fans, the debut represents more than a new car on the grid — it signals renewed U.S. involvement in a championship that has seen surging popularity stateside in recent years.

Legacy and Future

For Mario Andretti, the MAC-26 represents more than recognition; it symbolizes continuity. His championship-winning era helped define American participation in Formula 1, and now his name accompanies the country’s newest attempt to leave a mark on the sport.

Whether Cadillac immediately challenges the front-runners or builds steadily over several seasons, its presence reshapes the Formula 1 landscape. The 2026 campaign will reveal how quickly the MAC-26 can adapt to the intensity of Grand Prix competition.

One thing is certain: when Cadillac lines up on the grid in Melbourne, it will carry not only corporate ambition but also decades of racing heritage embodied in three letters — MAC.
