After an honorable discharge from the United States Air Force in 1962, Norris opened a martial arts studio that grew into a thriving chain. His clientele included stars like Steve McQueen, Priscilla Presley, and Bob Barker—with McQueen ultimately encouraging him to pursue acting.

Norris made his film debut with a small, uncredited role in The Wrecking Crew (1968), later appearing in several films in the early 1970s while competing in martial arts. After retiring from competitive karate in 1974, he turned fully to acting.
