Authorities say the fire erupted just after 3:00 a.m. on March 22 in a two-story duplex in Modesto, where nine people were inside at the time.

Chaos in the Early Morning Hours

As first responders raced to the scene, the building was already engulfed in chaos. Thick smoke poured from the living room while flames surged from the attached garage, creating a scene likened to a furnace breaking loose in the dark.

According to reports from CBS News and local affiliates, six people managed to escape the burning structure. Firefighters worked quickly to pull an adult and two children from inside—each critically injured.

They were rushed to the hospital, but one of the children, a 7-year-old girl, could not be saved.

Officials confirmed the child’s death, marking the most heartbreaking outcome of the blaze.

“Unfortunately, this is a tragic incident. I mean, a little girl ultimately lost her life,” said Michael Carranza of the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Office.

A GoFundMe campaign identified the injured victims as Maribel Iniguez and her two young daughters, all of whom were caught in what organizers described as a “devastating house fire.” The organizer, Amador Carrillo, shared their names as the community began to rally support.
