NASA Prepares Crewed Return to Moon After More Than 50 Years

NASA is moving ahead with plans to send astronauts back toward the moon for the first time in more than five decades, marking a pivotal moment in its Artemis program and the United States’ broader push to reestablish leadership in space amid intensifying competition with China.

The Artemis II mission, scheduled for launch as early as Wednesday, will carry three American astronauts and one Canadian aboard the Orion spacecraft atop the Space Launch System rocket. The 10-day journey will loop around the moon and return to Earth, taking the crew farther into space than any humans have traveled before.

This flight represents the first crewed test mission under the Artemis program, NASA’s flagship initiative to establish sustained lunar exploration. The effort has cost at least $93 billion since 2012. Humans have not landed on the moon since the Apollo 17 mission in 1972, and NASA is targeting a return to the lunar surface in 2028, focusing on the challenging terrain of the moon’s south pole.

The United States remains the only nation to have landed humans on another celestial body, achieving six lunar landings during the Apollo era, driven largely by Cold War competition with the Soviet Union.

Now, China has emerged as a major rival, advancing its own lunar ambitions through a series of robotic missions and setting a goal of sending astronauts to the moon by 2030. U.S. officials have emphasized the importance of reaching the lunar surface ahead of China.

Searching for Answers Beyond Earth

Astronaut Christina Koch, a mission specialist on Artemis II, highlighted the scientific significance of returning to the moon, describing it as a key to understanding the solar system and a stepping stone to Mars.

“The moon is a ‘witness plate’ to the solar system’s formation, and a stepping stone to Mars, ‘where we might have the most likelihood of finding evidence of past life,’” Koch said Sunday.

“Many, many countries have recognized the value that there is in exploring further into the solar system, to the moon and on to Mars,” she told reporters. “They recognize that not only can we gain all these extremely tangible benefits, but that we have the opportunity to answer the question that could be the question of our lifetime, which is, are we alone?”

“Answering that question starts at the moon,” she said. “The question is not should we go, but should we lead, or should we follow?”

NASA envisions a series of increasingly complex Artemis missions over the next decade, aiming to establish norms for international and commercial activity on the lunar surface. The agency sees the moon as both a testing ground for future Mars missions and a potential hub for resource extraction.

Building a Lunar Economy

A key component of NASA’s strategy is its reliance on private industry to help develop lunar capabilities, with the long-term goal of fostering a commercial market on and around the moon.

Analysts say the economic potential remains uncertain. A January report by PricewaterhouseCoopers projected that lunar surface activities could generate $127 billion in revenue by 2050, with investments ranging from $72 billion to $88 billion over the same period.

However, experts caution that government funding will remain the primary driver of lunar development for the foreseeable future.

“NASA did not see a short-run economic value that companies would be able to derive that would allow NASA to be hands-off,” said Akhil Rao, an economist at Rational Futures and a former NASA research economist.

Testing Systems for Future Missions

Artemis II will build on an uncrewed test flight conducted in 2022, placing greater demands on the Orion spacecraft and Space Launch System. The astronauts will evaluate life-support systems, navigation, communications and onboard interfaces critical for future missions.

The launch is planned for April 1, with backup opportunities extending through April 6 depending on weather conditions and technical readiness at the Florida launch site. Another window could open April 30, based on orbital alignment between Earth and the moon.

Looking ahead, Artemis III — currently planned for 2027 — will involve a complex operation in Earth orbit, where Orion will dock with two lunar landers developed by Blue Origin and SpaceX. The maneuver is intended to demonstrate how astronauts will transfer to landers before descending to the lunar surface.

That mission was added in February by NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman, a billionaire private astronaut who has introduced new priorities for the program. His changes have delayed the first crewed lunar landing to Artemis IV.

Compared with the Apollo program, Artemis relies on a more intricate architecture involving multiple commercial partners. Boeing and Northrop Grumman lead development of the Space Launch System, while Lockheed Martin manufactures the Orion spacecraft.

Meanwhile, SpaceX and Blue Origin are building lunar landers with NASA funding under contracts that also allow them to market their spacecraft to other customers, reflecting NASA’s broader push to encourage private-sector competition and participation in lunar exploration.
