          The United States has launched another deadly strike in the Eastern Pacific, killing three people accused of drug trafficking in a rapidly escalating military campaign that critics warn is spiraling into a legal and humanitarian crisis.

The strike, announced Wednesday by US Southern Command, is the latest in a string of aggressive operations targeting vessels suspected of “narco-trafficking.” The strategy has already left at least 178 people dead since September.

According to the military, the targeted vessel was linked to unnamed “Designated Terrorist Organizations” and was traveling along well-known drug routes in the region.

Footage released by the US military shows an airstrike slamming into the vessel, igniting a fiery explosion at sea.

"On April 15, at the direction of #SOUTHCOM commander Gen. Francis L. Donovan, Joint Task Force Southern Spear conducted a lethal kinetic strike on a vessel operated by Designated Terrorist Organizations. Intelligence confirmed the vessel was transiting along known narco-trafficking routes in the Eastern Pacific and was engaged in narco-trafficking operations. Three male narco-terrorists were killed during this action. No U.S. military forces were harmed."

The latest attack comes just one day after another US strike in the same region killed four people. Earlier in the week, a separate operation left two more dead.

Together, the strikes point to a sharp intensification of US military action at sea, following an order by President Donald Trump to crack down on Latin American cartels accused of funneling drugs into the United States.

A growing death toll and rising alarm

Since the campaign began, at least 178 people have been killed in US strikes on suspected drug-trafficking vessels.

But as the body count rises, so do concerns over legality and accountability.

Human rights organizations and legal experts say the operations may cross a dangerous line. They warn that a law enforcement issue is being turned into a military conflict.

"US officials cannot summarily kill people they accuse of smuggling drugs," said Sarah Yager, Washington director at Human Rights Watch.

"The problem of narcotics entering the United States is not an armed conflict, and US officials cannot circumvent their human rights obligations by pretending otherwise."

Legal firestorm over "extrajudicial killings"

Groups like Human Rights Watch have condemned the strikes as "unlawful extrajudicial killings," raising alarm that some targets may not even be traffickers but civilian fishing vessels caught in the crossfire.

The American Civil Liberties Union has also challenged the administration’s justification, calling its claims "unsubstantiated, fear-mongering claims."

Legal experts argue that even if individuals are involved in drug trafficking, they should be arrested and prosecuted, not killed in military strikes.

Effectiveness under scrutiny

Beyond legal concerns, critics are also questioning whether the campaign is achieving its stated goal.

Much of the fentanyl fueling the US overdose crisis, often cited as justification for the strikes, is not transported by sea. Instead, it typically crosses into the US over land from Mexico, where it is produced using precursor chemicals sourced from China and India.

That raises a troubling question. Is the US targeting the wrong battlefield?

As the strikes continue and scrutiny intensifies, the campaign is shaping up to be one of the most controversial anti-drug efforts in recent years, one that could carry serious consequences far beyond the waters of the Eastern Pacific.
