A chilling phone scam posing as law enforcement has left a Southington woman out $14,000, prompting urgent warnings from police about a growing wave of Bitcoin fraud targeting vulnerable residents. Authorities say the case underscores how quickly criminals can manipulate victims into handing over life savings through fear and pressure tactics.

How the Scam Unfolded

Southington police said the woman contacted authorities after receiving a disturbing call from someone she believed was a Hartford police officer. The caller claimed she was facing a serious legal threat.

Officer Michael Morley explained that the scammer convinced her she had an outstanding federal arrest warrant, escalating the fear and urgency.

“Ultimately, she was given a directive to travel to the state of Massachusetts at a gas station to purchase $14,000 worth of Bitcoin,” Morley said. “She was then instructed to deposit that into a Bitcoin wallet, which is essentially a bank transaction, but in the Bitcoin world, and then was told to follow up and travel to the Hartford Police Department. Obviously, when she got to the Hartford Police Department, they had no information on this as it was fraudulent.”

By the time she reached the police station and realized the deception, the money was already gone.

One Phone Call, Thousands Lost

Officials said the entire loss stemmed from a single phone conversation, highlighting how convincing these scams can be when victims are isolated and pressured.

Morley believes the woman may have been specifically targeted because of her age. He also noted that the scammers appeared to have selected a gas station in Massachusetts for a reason.

“What we’ve seen is some of these gas stations and other fuel stations have minimal governance over their Bitcoin stations,” Morley said. “And what I mean by minimal governance is maybe a lack of video surveillance, maybe a lack of questions from the staff that work there.”

Investigators say these locations can become easy access points for criminals directing victims to convert cash into untraceable cryptocurrency.

Police Warn of Major Red Flags

Southington police are urging residents to recognize warning signs, especially when callers demand secrecy, urgency, or Bitcoin payments. Authorities stressed that legitimate law enforcement agencies will never demand cryptocurrency transactions.

Morley emphasized that pressure tactics are a key indicator of fraud.

“If there’s any pressure or urgency to remain on the phone, I think that’s a heightened response as well where you need to proceed with caution,” Morley said. “Especially in a case like this, if the officer is indicating you shouldn’t get off the phone, I find that to be alarming.”

Officials say scammers often rely on intimidation, preventing victims from verifying information or contacting real authorities.

Investigation Continues as Recovery Looks Unlikely

Southington detectives are continuing to investigate the fraud, but police acknowledge that recovering the $14,000 will be extremely difficult. Authorities say many of these operations are run from outside the country, making tracing and recovery efforts complex and often unsuccessful.

Police are again warning residents to hang up immediately on any caller demanding payment in Bitcoin, especially when the conversation involves threats, warrants, or urgent legal action.
