Walmart is making another aggressive move in its AI transformation, and this time, hundreds of corporate workers are caught in the middle.

The retail giant is preparing to cut or relocate around 1,000 corporate employees as it restructures key technology and artificial intelligence teams, according to a report by The Wall Street Journal. The shake-up signals how far Walmart is willing to go to compete in the escalating AI race against rivals like Amazon, Costco and Aldi.

The restructuring comes as Walmart pushes deeper into artificial intelligence to modernize operations, improve customer experiences and tighten efficiency across its global business. Under CEO John Furner, the company has been pouring resources into digital transformation efforts as competition intensifies across the retail industry.

Inside Walmart’s AI Restructuring Push

According to The Wall Street Journal, Walmart’s head of global AI acceleration, Daniel Danker, and global technology chief Suresh Kumar conducted a review of the company’s internal structure and concluded that several teams were duplicating work.

The executives reportedly informed employees through an internal memo that some departments had been tackling similar problems, prompting leadership to streamline overlapping operations.

The result is a major corporate reshuffle that could significantly alter Walmart’s technology workforce.

Some employees impacted by the restructuring are being encouraged to apply for other open roles inside the company. Others have reportedly been asked to relocate to Walmart’s hubs in Bentonville, Arkansas, or Northern California.

Walmart Intensifies AI Battle Against Amazon

The latest cuts underscore the growing pressure inside corporate America as companies race to dominate the AI boom.

Walmart has spent the last several years trying to close the technology gap with Amazon, which has aggressively expanded its AI capabilities, including the launch of Rufus, its generative AI-powered shopping assistant.

Last year, Walmart rolled out AI-powered “super agents” designed to improve shopping experiences and boost operational efficiency. The initiative gained momentum after Danker joined the company and accelerated Walmart’s broader AI strategy.

The company’s leadership sees artificial intelligence as central to future growth, especially as retailers fight for customer loyalty in an increasingly digital marketplace.

Economic Concerns Add Pressure

The timing of the restructuring is also notable.

Earlier this year, CEO John Furner reportedly expressed caution about the state of US consumers, signaling concerns about economic pressure and spending behavior.

That uncertainty has pushed major corporations to focus heavily on efficiency, cost control and productivity, especially in technology divisions where AI is rapidly reshaping workflows.

Walmart has already been consolidating workers into larger corporate hubs over the past several years. Previous restructuring efforts included moving employees to major offices in Arkansas and California while reducing certain corporate positions.

Now, the company’s latest AI-driven overhaul appears to mark another pivotal moment in Walmart’s effort to redefine itself for the next era of retail.
