Netflix Releases The Idaho Murders: College Nightmare Days after Kohberger Claims He is Innocent

BOISE, Idaho — The Idaho Murders: College Nightmare is a three-part docuseries released July 29, 2026. The Netflix series is drawing national attention, once again, to the murders.

Convicted killer Bryan Kohberger has also filed a petition seeking to withdraw his guilty plea. He claimed his attorneys failed to tell him about evidence he believes could support his innocence.

The July 27, 2026, filing comes just over a year after Kohberger pleaded guilty to murdering four University of Idaho students — Madison Mogen, 21; Kaylee Goncalves, 21; Xana Kernodle, 20; and Ethan Chapin, 20 — inside an off-campus Moscow home.

The new legal challenge coincides with the release of the three-part Netflix docuseries “The Idaho Murders: College Nightmare,” which revisits the killings, investigation and case against Kohberger.

The Idaho Murders Details Four Students Killed in Moscow

The murders occurred during the early morning hours of Nov. 13, 2022, at an off-campus rental house on King Road near the University of Idaho campus in Moscow.

Goncalves, Mogen and Kernodle lived at the home with two other roommates. Chapin, who was dating Kernodle, was staying overnight.

Goncalves was in Mogen’s bedroom, while Chapin was in Kernodle’s room. All four students were stabbed to death.

The killings horrified the nation and stunned Moscow, a small college community that had not recorded a homicide in several years.

For weeks, investigators searched for a suspect as the case attracted enormous national attention. Kohberger, who was studying criminology at nearby Washington State University, was arrested in Pennsylvania on Dec. 30, 2022.

He initially maintained his innocence as prosecutors prepared a death penalty case against him.

That changed in July 2025.

Kohberger Pleaded Guilty to the Idaho Murders

Kohberger pleaded guilty July 2, 2025, to four counts of first-degree murder and one count of burglary under an agreement that removed the possibility of the death penalty.

On July 23, 2025, he was sentenced to four consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole, along with an additional sentence for burglary.

The plea agreement brought the criminal prosecution to an abrupt conclusion and eliminated the highly anticipated murder trial.

Kohberger also signed a factual basis document acknowledging responsibility for the killings.

Kohberger's Original Guilty Plea Claimed the Idaho Murders were "willful" and premeditated

In that document, he admitted the murders were “willful, unlawful, deliberate, with premeditation and with malice aforethought.”

During the plea hearing, District Judge Steven Hippler directly questioned Kohberger about his decision.

“Are you pleading guilty because you are guilty?” Hippler asked.

“Yes,” Kohberger replied.

Kohberger is serving his sentences at the Idaho Maximum Security Institution in Kuna.

New Petition Challenges Guilty Plea

On July 27, 2026, Kohberger filed a petition for post-conviction relief in Idaho’s Fourth Judicial District Court seeking to withdraw his guilty plea.

Kohberger claims his legal counsel failed to inform him about what he describes as “exculpatory discovery” that prosecutors had turned over while plea negotiations were underway.

Among the evidence cited by Kohberger is material recovered from Chapin’s hand at the murder scene.

“Namely, clumps of hair found in Ethan Chapin’s hands,” Kohberger wrote in an affidavit accompanying the petition.

Kohberger argues that information about the evidence could have affected his decision to accept the plea agreement.

However, court records concerning the hair evidence raise questions about his characterization of the material and its potential significance.

What Testing Found in Chapin’s Hand

An FBI Trace Evidence Unit report finalized Jan. 27, 2023, documented debris recovered from Chapin’s right hand and Kernodle’s left hand.

Investigators examined the debris for hairs microscopically consistent with Kohberger’s head-hair sample.

None were found.

The description of the evidence as “clumps of hair” does not appear to originate in the FBI report. That description was used by retired FBI agent Chris Whitcomb in his book “Broken Plea,” which examines Kohberger’s unexpected decision to plead guilty.

Kohberger Petition Mirrors Book Titled the Broken Plea

Whitcomb has publicly raised questions about whether the material found in Chapin’s hand was adequately tested.

But court documents indicate that at least one hair recovered from Chapin’s hand was examined by a forensic expert hired by Kohberger’s defense.

Ruth Ballard examined “one hair from the right hand” of Chapin and determined that it was “morphologically consistent with Decedent Chapin’s own reference hair.”

That finding indicates the tested hair was consistent with Chapin’s own hair rather than hair belonging to an unidentified person.

It remains unclear whether Kohberger knew about Ballard’s findings before filing his petition or whether he is claiming that additional material recovered from Chapin’s hand was never tested.

The existence of the material itself does not establish Kohberger’s innocence. His petition asks the court to consider whether the evidence and his attorneys’ handling of it affected the validity of his guilty plea.

Kohberger Claims Ineffective Assistance of Counsel

The evidence recovered from Chapin’s hand is only one part of Kohberger’s attempt to overturn his convictions.

He also claims he received “ineffective assistance of counsel.”

Kohberger argues that his guilty plea was not entered “knowingly or voluntarily” because it was allegedly induced by unkept promises and threats from his legal counsel.

Before entering his plea, Kohberger was represented by attorney Anne Taylor, an experienced Idaho defense lawyer qualified to represent defendants in death penalty cases.

Kohberger’s allegations will have to be considered alongside his previous written and courtroom admissions.

He signed a factual basis accepting responsibility for all four killings and then pleaded guilty in open court.

Those admissions could present a substantial obstacle as he attempts to persuade the court to allow him to withdraw his plea.

Netflix Revisits the Idaho Murders

Kohberger’s new legal challenge comes as the murders receive another round of national attention through Netflix.

The documentary revisits the lives and deaths of Goncalves, Mogen, Kernodle and Chapin, along with the investigation that eventually led authorities to Kohberger.

The killings have generated documentaries, television specials, podcasts and books since 2022.

Public interest was intensified by the mystery surrounding the murders before Kohberger’s arrest and by his eventual decision to plead guilty rather than face a jury.

Kohberger has never publicly explained why he killed the four students.

His guilty plea meant prosecutors did not have to present their complete case at trial, leaving many details of the prosecution’s evidence without the public examination that would have occurred before a jury.

Now, Kohberger’s attempt to withdraw his plea could again put evidence from one of America’s most closely followed murder cases under scrutiny.

Whether his latest claims are sufficient to disturb four murder convictions and four consecutive life sentences will be decided by the Idaho courts.
