It occurred 49 years after a Bell 206 news helicopter piloted by KNBC's Francis Gary Powers — a former U.S. Air Force officer and CIA employee — crashed near the Encino neighborhood, killing him and cameraman George Spears. That earlier crash happened as the pair were returning from covering a wildfire in Santa Barbara, when their helicopter ran out of fuel and went down.

A Colleague Reflects Mid-Broadcast

Desmond Shaw, a helicopter news reporter for the CBS LA station, appeared on air Tuesday night from inside his own chopper, reflecting on recent personal losses, including the deaths of his parents. He said that grief felt "compounded" by news that the city itself had now been struck by what he called "a double tragedy."

"The poor people that were caught in that bus crash today, I don't want them to be forgotten either," Shaw said, refusing to let one tragedy overshadow the other.
