Jeanie Poling Died at 67, Leaving San Francisco's Bluegrass Scene in Mourning

Some musicians fill arenas; others fill something arguably harder to measure — the soul of an entire local scene. Jeanie Poling belonged firmly in the second category. Beloved for her decades of work as a country and bluegrass musician, Poling has died, leaving behind a community that credits her with helping build San Francisco's bluegrass identity from the ground up.

The Details of Her Passing

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Poling died on Aug. 26 after battling two rare forms of cancer over the previous three years — a fight that stretched on long enough to test anyone's resilience, yet one she reportedly faced with characteristic grit.

A Musical Partnership Spanning Decades

Poling performed alongside her husband, Chuck Poling, and the Chronicle described her as being "at the heart of San Francisco's bluegrass scene" — not a peripheral figure, but a defining one. The couple hosted the Bluegrass Country Jam at the Plough and Stars for more than 20 years, a beloved tradition that ran until the COVID-19 pandemic finally forced its shutdown. Remarkably, according to the Chronicle, Jeanie and Chuck performed together for a full 42 years — a musical partnership that outlasted most marriages entirely, let alone most bands.

Friends Remember Her Spirit

News of her death sent friends and fans to social media to share their memories. "Every so often, people leave this planet and really leave a mark on our hearts," Cheryl Altman wrote on Facebook. "We lost one of those people this week, Jeanie Poling (of Chuck (hearts) Jeanie)."

Altman described a friendship that deepened in Poling's final weeks, recalling how the two would go on "rockstar clothing hunts" through the Haight neighborhood whenever Jeanie felt down after chemotherapy treatments. "She'd model her finds — and of course I'd take pictures of her 'feeling like a rockstar,'" Altman wrote, describing small acts of joy carved out amid an otherwise grueling fight.

Altman closed her tribute with a message to the family: "To Isabel, Ruben and Chuck — please know that Team Jeanie is right there with you. To 'Rockstar Jeanie,' I am so grateful to have been your friend, and you will be forever in my heart."

A Husband's Tribute to His Partner of 44 Years

Chuck Poling also shared his own tribute on Facebook, offering a more intimate account of his wife's final days. "MY JEANIE," he wrote. "She passed away on August 26 form pneumonia after a three-and-a-half year battle with cancer. She fought the good fight but knew when to throw in the towel."

Leaning on Family Through Grief

Chuck expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support he and his children have received. "Thanks to all of you who have opened your hearts to me and my son and daughter over the loss of Jeanie. I can tell you that I am being well taken care of," he wrote. He praised his children, Isabel and Reuben, along with Reuben's wife Kat, for supporting him even while grieving their own mother. "I've never been prouder of them," he added, noting that he planned to reach out individually to those who had offered help, but that for now, the family needed time to "hunker down."

A Love Story Woven Into Every Note

Chuck's tribute closed with a reflection on what made their partnership so extraordinary. "I could say so much about Jeanie but can easily sum it up by saying she made all my dreams come true," he wrote. "I shared 44 years of true love — that elusive magic that so many people search their whole lives and never find — with a beautiful, bright, funny, and oh, so talented woman. A wonderful mother, an amazing singer, and accomplished professional, and my partner, my lover, and my biggest fan."

For San Francisco's bluegrass community, Jeanie Poling wasn't just a performer who happened to live in the city — she was, by every account, one of the threads holding the scene together. That thread has now come to its end, but the decades of music, friendship and joy she wove into it remain firmly in place.
