Wrecking a million-dollar supercar on a suburban embankment is an entirely different kind of story — and Elon Musk, the Tesla and SpaceX founder now recognized as the world's wealthiest individual, has both on his resume. Long before rockets became his signature, Musk once cruised around Silicon Valley in a classic $1 million McLaren, only to total the vehicle with billionaire financier Peter Thiel riding shotgun. "I wasn't wearing a seatbelt, which is not advisable. Elon's first comment was, 'Wow, Peter, that was really intense.' And then it was: 'You know, I had read all these stories about people who made money and bought sports cars and crashed them. But I knew it would never happen to me, so I didn't get any insurance.' Why Skipping Insurance Is Never a Smart Bet

According to auto insurance experts, driving without coverage is a dangerous gamble regardless of net worth — whether you're a trillionaire or driving a used Toyota. "The car is the smallest risk," W. Travis Patterson, managing partner at Patterson Law Group in Fort Worth, Texas, told Moneywise. "If you total your own uninsured car, you lose the car. If you hit someone else, you owe whatever a jury says their injuries are worth, and no amount of wealth caps that number."

Illegal in Nearly Every State

Patterson also pointed out that driving without liability coverage is illegal in every state except New Hampshire, "which means a suspended license, fines, and a very unsympathetic jury when they hear you skipped insurance you could easily afford," he said — a legal exposure that doesn't care how many companies you've founded.

Wealth Makes Insurance More Critical, Not Less

Counterintuitively, having significant wealth actually raises the stakes for carrying liability coverage rather than lowering them. "Most injured people never see full compensation because the at-fault driver carries a minimum-limits policy and owns nothing worth chasing," Patterson explained. A wealthy driver flips that dynamic entirely — attorneys representing injured parties will actively search out substantial assets, pursuing the full value of the injury rather than settling for whatever a basic policy limit allows. "Self-insuring means volunteering to be that defendant," Patterson noted, framing wealth without coverage as essentially painting a target on your own back.

The Real Financial Stakes of a Serious Crash

Behind the wheel, even billionaires face steep consequences when a crash causes serious injury. "Catastrophic injury claims routinely settle in the millions," Edward Hsyeh, owner and CEO at New York City-based Anvo Insurance, told Moneywise. "Lifetime care for a paralysis or brain injury can run $10 million or more. Without insurance, that's a judgment against the driver."

What's Actually at Risk Financially

The specific assets exposed depend on state law, but generally include bank accounts, brokerage accounts, real estate beyond any applicable homestead exemption, business interests, and even future income through wage garnishment. "In 2000, Musk's wealth was largely tied up in company stock," Hsyeh noted. "A judgment creditor can go after that too. A crash like that could have forced him to liquidate equity at exactly the wrong moment" — a scenario that could have altered the entire trajectory of his subsequent ventures had the outcome been different.

Why Standard Policies Don't Fit Luxury Vehicles

Hsyeh explained that there's a meaningful gap between how insurance treats everyday vehicles versus collector-grade machines like Musk's McLaren. "Standard auto policies pay actual cash value (ACV); what the car is worth at the moment of loss after depreciation," he said. "That works for a Camry. It doesn't work for a car that's appreciating, has no comparable sales, or costs more to repair than a standard adjuster has ever seen."

What Luxury Car Owners Actually Need

For owners of high-value vehicles, Hsyeh emphasized the importance of specialized coverage features tailored to their unique circumstances. "That includes agreed-value coverage, where you set the number up front and that's what gets paid, and specialty insurers built for collector cars, not a standard insurance company with an endorsement," he said. He added that wealthy vehicle owners also typically need coverage permitting specialist repair shops rather than standard network body shops, along with usage terms that accurately reflect how the vehicle is actually driven — since most specialty policies are built around the assumption of limited mileage rather than regular Bay Area commutes.

For a man who has since built his fortune on precision engineering and calculated risk in rockets and electric vehicles alike, this early McLaren crash stands as a peculiar footnote — proof that even someone who would go on to master landing spacecraft once badly underestimated the risk of driving without a safety net of his own.
