What Muse Users Need to Know

• Muse can buy products, send emails, negotiate bills and interact with websites in your name—raising a bigger legal question about who is responsible when an AI agent gets something wrong.
• Meta says Muse separates passwords and payment information from the AI itself, but the agent still requires extraordinary access to a user’s digital life.
• Amazon’s decision to block Muse shows that a user giving an AI permission to act does not necessarily mean another company must allow that agent onto its platform.

Meta’s new Muse AI agent does something far more consequential than answer questions.

It acts.

Muse can browse websites, fill out forms, book appointments, handle customer-service disputes and negotiate on a user’s behalf. Meta says it can continue working after the app closes and return when it needs approval for sensitive actions, including sending an email or completing a purchase.

That difference matters legally.

Once an AI crosses from “tell me what to do” into “do it for me,” mistakes can create actual financial, contractual and privacy consequences.

Federal law already recognizes this possibility. Under the Electronic Signatures in Global and National Commerce Act, a contract cannot be denied legal effect merely because an electronic agent participated in creating it, provided the agent’s action is legally attributable to the person being bound.

In plain English, saying “the AI did it” may not automatically get a consumer out of a transaction.

Imagine telling Muse to negotiate your cable bill. What happens if it agrees to a new two-year contract? Or instructing it to return merchandise and it accepts store credit instead of a refund? The legal fight may turn on authorization—what the user instructed, what permissions were granted, what Muse actually did, and whether the company dealing with Muse reasonably treated those actions as the user’s own.

Meta appears to recognize that risk. The company says Muse requires approval before critical actions such as sending emails and purchases and provides users with an audit trail showing what the agent has done and plans to do.

That audit trail could become much more than a convenience feature. In a lawsuit, chargeback, contract dispute or fraud investigation, it could become evidence.

Privacy raises another problem.

Muse may interact with email, calendars, shopping accounts and other connected services. That information does not necessarily belong only to the Muse user. An inbox contains messages from coworkers, clients, family members, lawyers, doctors and businesses. An AI agent permitted to read that inbox therefore may encounter substantial amounts of information about people who never consented to using Muse.

Meta says Muse operates inside a dedicated Secure VM, keeps credentials in secure storage that Muse itself cannot read, allows users to limit connected-app permissions and does not send Muse conversations or VM data into Meta’s advertising systems. Users can also opt out of having their Muse interactions used to train Meta AI models.

Those are important protections. They do not eliminate legal exposure.

The FTC has repeatedly warned AI companies that privacy promises must match actual practices. It has said companies may violate federal consumer-protection law when they break commitments about how consumer information will be collected, shared or used.

California is moving in the same direction. Privacy regulations effective in 2026 expanded requirements involving cybersecurity, risk assessments and automated decision-making technologies, with additional ADMT obligations beginning in 2027.

Then came Amazon.

Amazon blocked Muse from shopping on Amazon.com, saying continued access by an unauthorized AI agent violated its Conditions of Use. Amazon has separately adopted agent requirements stating that automated agents must identify themselves, comply with its policies and stop accessing its services when Amazon requests it.

That dispute exposes something consumers should understand now.

Your permission is not necessarily the only permission an AI agent needs.

A user may authorize Muse to shop, negotiate or communicate. The website on the other side may still say no.

And as AI agents become capable of entering transactions, communicating with businesses and interacting with other people without constant supervision, courts will increasingly confront a deceptively simple question:

When your AI agent acts for you, whose action is it legally?

For many transactions, the answer may eventually be yours.
