Police and emergency personnel descended on a San Diego mosque Sunday afternoon after authorities received reports of an active shooter at the Islamic Center of San Diego — one of the city's most prominent Muslim worship and community facilities — triggering a large-scale law enforcement response that put the surrounding neighborhood on high alert.

The San Diego Police Department confirmed in a post on X that officers had responded to a reported active shooter at the center. In a follow-up update issued shortly before 4 p.m. ET, the department described the scene as "active but contained" — language that signaled law enforcement had established a perimeter but that the situation had not yet been fully resolved. Whether there were any casualties was not immediately clear as of the initial reports.

City and State Officials Respond Immediately

The shooting drew an immediate response from the highest levels of California's government. Gov. Gavin Newsom said on X that he had been briefed on the unfolding situation and that the Governor's Office of Emergency Services was actively coordinating with local law enforcement agencies on the ground — a deployment of state resources that underscored the gravity with which officials were treating the incident.

San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria was among the first city officials to publicly address the shooting, posting on X shortly before 3:15 p.m. ET that first responders were "actively working to protect the community and secure the area." His message was brief but carried the unmistakable weight of a city confronting a crisis in real time.

A Community Under Threat

The Islamic Center of San Diego is not merely a place of worship — it is a cornerstone institution of the region's Muslim community, serving thousands of congregants and functioning as a hub for religious, educational, and civic life. An active shooter incident at such a location carries a dimension beyond the immediate physical danger: it strikes at the sense of safety and belonging that houses of worship are meant to embody.

The shooting comes against a national backdrop of rising threats against religious institutions and minority communities, and authorities have been placed on heightened alert at mosques, synagogues, and churches across the country in recent years following a series of devastating attacks.

What Was Known — and What Wasn't

As of the initial reports, critical details remained unconfirmed. The identity of the shooter, the number of victims if any, the circumstances that triggered the attack, and whether the suspect was in custody were all questions that law enforcement had not yet publicly answered. The scene, described as contained, suggested that the immediate perimeter had been secured — but the full scope of what had occurred inside the Islamic Center remained unknown.

The San Diego Police Department urged the public to avoid the area as the investigation continued and additional law enforcement resources were deployed to the scene.

In a city, a country, and a world where the news of a shooting at a house of worship has become a sentence that lands with terrible familiarity, what unfolded Sunday afternoon in San Diego was still unfolding — and the full weight of it had yet to be measured.
