Admiral is preparing to cut about 500 jobs in the U.K. as the insurer launches a sweeping cost-reduction effort aimed at saving £100 million.

The proposed reductions apply only to Admiral's U.K. insurance business and represent roughly 5% of its workforce, putting hundreds of employees in the path of a restructuring designed to make the company operate more efficiently.

The Cardiff-based insurer said the changes are part of a broader effort announced earlier this year to reduce costs by £100 million. The company said the planned job cuts are intended to help it become faster and more efficient rather than being driven by its use of artificial intelligence.

Alistair Hargreaves, chief executive of Admiral Insurance U.K., acknowledged the difficult situation facing employees whose positions could be affected.

"We recognise this will be a difficult time for affected colleagues," Hargreaves said.

Admiral said the proposed redundancies form part of the £100 million savings program announced earlier this year. The insurer is positioning the changes as a way to streamline its operations while continuing to focus on customer service.

The restructuring could reshape parts of the company's U.K. insurance operation as Admiral looks to reduce costs in a competitive industry.

AI Not Believed to Be Behind the Cuts

Admiral has incorporated artificial intelligence into parts of its operations, but the company said AI adoption is not believed to be responsible for the planned reductions.

The Welsh government said it was disappointed to learn that Admiral planned to make the redundancies.

The response adds another layer to a restructuring that will unfold against the backdrop of Cardiff's significant connection to Admiral.
