Amazon Web Services Outage Disrupts Major Platforms Including Coinbase, Robinhood, and Reddit

Amazon Web Servers

The Amazon Web Services (AWS) outage that struck early Monday morning (Oct. 20) sent shockwaves across the internet. The outage briefly disabled some of the world’s most popular platforms. This includes Coinbase, Robinhood, Reddit, Snapchat, and even Amazon’s own Prime Video.

The event is being called one of AWS’s largest disruptions in years, reigniting urgent discussions about cloud dependency, cybersecurity, and the future of digital resilience.

What Is Amazon Web Services (AWS)?

Amazon Web Services is the backbone of much of the modern internet. It offers cloud computing, data storage, and on-demand servers to millions of organizations worldwide. Rather than operating their own physical infrastructure, companies rent AWS’s computing power — a model that’s fast, scalable, and cost-efficient.

However, that convenience comes with a major caveat: dependence. When AWS goes down, every app or service running on it feels the impact simultaneously.

As Business Insider reported, this latest outage underscores the inherent vulnerability of a digital ecosystem dominated by a handful of cloud giants — AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud.

Amazon Web Services Outage: What Happened

Around dawn on the U.S. East Coast, AWS’s internal networking system suffered a critical malfunction affecting a key database product. Within minutes, platforms like Coinbase, Robinhood, Reddit, Snapchat, and Venmo began reporting issues.

According to Downdetector, more than 4 million incident reports were logged globally at the outage’s peak. Snapchat alone recorded over 22,000 user complaints, while Roblox surpassed 12,000.

AWS engineers later confirmed the disruption was not caused by a cyberattack. It was created by a technical fault that temporarily crippled server communication across regions. By mid-morning, AWS announced that “most requests should now be succeeding,” noting that the issue had been fully mitigated (Newsweek update).

Financial Platforms Hit Hard — But Funds Remain Safe

Among those affected were leading cryptocurrency and financial platforms:

  • Coinbase users reported login failures and stalled transactions, but the company confirmed that all funds remained secure in offline cold storage wallets.
  • Robinhood experienced API and trading disruptions, delaying stock and crypto transactions.
  • Venmo and Chime faced transfer delays and app downtime.
  • Even Lloyds Bank and Bank of Scotland saw temporary outages tied to AWS network instability.

A Coinbase spokesperson said, “While customers were temporarily unable to access their accounts, their assets were never at risk.”

The Broader Impact: From Crypto to Social Media and Gaming

Beyond finance, the outage rippled through virtually every sector:

  • Social media: Reddit, Snapchat, and Signal all experienced downtime.
  • Gaming: Roblox, Fortnite, and Clash Royale reported severe latency or outages.
  • Telecom and Government: Vodafone, BT, and the UK’s HMRC tax authority also suffered disruptions.
  • As one Reddit user posted, “It’s a reminder that the cloud isn’t some magical system — it’s just someone else’s computer, and sometimes, that computer crashes.”

The Bigger Picture: Centralization vs. Decentralization

Ironically, the AWS outage revealed how decentralized technologies like crypto still rely on centralized infrastructure for accessibility. Blockchain networks remained secure and operational — but exchanges, apps, and wallets went dark because their gateways are cloud-hosted.

This has prompted renewed interest in multi-cloud and decentralized hosting strategies. Experts argue that to safeguard digital assets, platforms must distribute workloads across multiple providers and build failover systems that can reroute traffic during outages.

As one cybersecurity analyst noted, “The next frontier of innovation isn’t just blockchain — it’s building a web that can’t be taken down by a single outage.”

A Wake-Up Call for the Digital World

The Amazon Web Services outage was more than a temporary glitch — it was a global stress test for the modern internet. For hours, the world saw how dependent we’ve become on a few companies to keep daily life online.

The incident serves as a reminder that in the digital age, resilience is just as vital as innovation. Until cloud systems evolve beyond their current bottlenecks, one crash can — and will — shake the world.
