Apple Inc. has quietly partnered with SpaceX and T-Mobile US Inc. to integrate Starlink’s satellite network into the latest iPhone software. This collaboration provides an alternative to Apple’s existing satellite communication service powered by Globalstar Inc. 

The new feature became functional with the recent software update, iOS 18.3, released on Monday.

Testing the Starlink Service on iPhones

According to insiders, iPhones equipped with the Starlink service from Elon Musk’s SpaceX are undergoing testing. While T-Mobile previously highlighted Starlink compatibility with Samsung devices like the Z Fold and S24 models, this marks Apple’s entry into the collaboration. 

T-Mobile has begun a limited beta program for Starlink-enabled iPhones, allowing select users to access texting capabilities via satellite. Early testers received messages stating, “You’re in the T-Mobile Starlink beta. You can now stay connected with texting via satellite from virtually anywhere. To start experiencing coverage beyond, please update to iOS 18.3.”

The feature includes a new toggle switch in the iPhone’s cellular data settings, enabling users to manage satellite connectivity. T-Mobile also extended the beta to Android 15 users, though full deployment for modern smartphones is expected later.

A Shift from the Globalstar Existing Service

Apple’s partnership with Globalstar in 2022 introduced satellite features for texting and emergency services. However, Starlink’s integration offers enhanced capabilities, including automatic satellite connection without the need to point the device at the sky. Currently, Apple’s Globalstar-powered service functions in multiple countries, whereas the Starlink feature is limited to the U.S.

The potential competition between Globalstar and Starlink has already impacted market dynamics. Globalstar shares dropped by 11% in premarket trading on Wednesday, signaling investor concerns over Apple’s diversification in satellite services.

While Starlink’s initial offering is limited to texting, SpaceX and T-Mobile plan to expand into data and voice services. 

SpaceX aims to make Starlink available globally through partnerships with other carriers. In a social media post, Musk hinted at “promising conversations with Apple” about Starlink integration as early as 2022, though the collaboration took years to materialize.

Differences Between Globalstar and Starlink Features

The key distinction between the two services lies in user experience. Globalstar requires users to align their iPhone with the sky to connect to a satellite, whereas Starlink’s automatic functionality eliminates this step. Both systems are designed for off-grid areas, such as remote hiking trails, and are non-functional where cellular networks are accessible. Apple’s Globalstar service will soon extend to its Ultra smartwatch, broadening its device compatibility.

Regulatory Approvals and Beta Testing

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) granted SpaceX conditional approval in November to integrate Starlink satellites with T-Mobile’s network. SpaceX began beta testing the service on Monday, with T-Mobile planning to scale the program in February. Apple’s announcement of iOS 18.3 highlighted AI improvements and bug fixes but omitted details about Starlink support.

Outlook for Satellite Connectivity

The collaboration between Apple, SpaceX, and T-Mobile signals a significant step forward in satellite technology for smartphones. With Apple’s dual support for Globalstar and Starlink, consumers gain more options for staying connected in remote locations.

As T-Mobile expands its beta program and SpaceX works toward global Starlink availability, the landscape of mobile satellite communication is set to evolve rapidly.
