Apple TV is expanding its streaming appeal by adding a collection of popular Hollywood movies to its subscription library at no additional charge. This will give subscribers access to blockbuster hits including Titanic, The Sixth Sense, The Martian and Gone Girl

The move represents a notable change for a service that has largely emphasized Apple-produced original programming. The new collection is being featured in a “Great Movies Available Now on Apple TV” section. However, availability can vary by country, and it remains unclear how long some licensed movies will be available.

Apple TV Expands Its Streaming Library

The newly featured movies include a mixture of action films, science fiction, dramas, comedies, and thrillers. Among the titles highlighted for U.S. viewers are Titanic, The Sixth Sense, The Martian, Arrival, The Bourne Identity, Looper, E.T., The Proposal, I, Robot, 21 Jump Street, Gone Girl, Zoolander, Zodiac, A Beautiful Mind, The Aviator and Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol.

For subscribers, the distinction is important. The movies are being made available through the subscription catalog rather than requiring viewers to pay a separate rental or purchase fee for each title.

Apple has experimented with adding licensed movies to its streaming service before. The latest expansion could help the company compete for viewers who increasingly expect streaming subscriptions to offer both original programming and recognizable movies from previous decades.

TechRadar reported that the new selection is available in the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada, with a more limited offering in Australia.

How Streaming Works

Streaming allows viewers to watch movies and television programs over the internet without first downloading an entire video file to a device.

When a subscriber selects a movie, the streaming service sends small portions of the video over an internet connection. The device temporarily stores some of that information in a buffer while continuing to receive additional data. The video is then decoded and displayed almost immediately.

Streaming quality depends on several factors, including internet speed, network congestion, the device being used, and the resolution of the video. A faster and more stable connection generally allows services to deliver higher-quality video with fewer interruptions.

Streaming Allows Flexible Viewing Schedules

Unlike traditional television, streaming does not require viewers to watch a program at a particular broadcast time. A subscriber can select available content from a digital catalog and begin watching on demand.

The Apple TV app can be accessed on Apple devices as well as numerous smart TVs, streaming devices, game consoles and web browsers. Apple says the app also brings together Apple Originals, sports, movies available to buy or rent, and other streaming services in one interface.

From Apple Computer to An Entertainment Company

Apple's expansion into entertainment is part of a much larger corporate history.

The company was founded on April 1, 1976, by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak and Ronald Wayne. Apple has since grown from a computer company into one of the world's largest technology businesses, with products and services ranging from the Mac and iPhone to the App Store, Apple Music, iCloud and Apple TV. Apple marked its 50th anniversary in 2026.

The original Apple TV device arrived in 2007 as a digital media player designed primarily to bring content from a computer and Apple's iTunes ecosystem to a television. Over time, the product evolved into a broader entertainment platform capable of accessing internet-based services and streaming content.

Today, the Apple TV name refers both to Apple's streaming service and its broader television ecosystem, which can include the Apple TV app and Apple TV 4K hardware.

A Broader Strategy for Apple TV

Apple launched its subscription streaming service in 2019 with a strategy centered heavily on original productions. Programs such as Ted Lasso, The Morning Show, Severance and Silo helped establish Apple as a serious competitor in the streaming business.

The addition of established Hollywood films gives subscribers another reason to open the service between new original releases.

Apple currently lists the U.S. subscription at $12.99 per month following a seven-day free trial. The service is also included in Apple One, Apple's bundle of subscription products.

Apple has also broadened its sports offerings. The company says subscribers can watch Friday Night Baseball, while 2026 brings every Major League Soccer match and every Formula 1 Grand Prix in the United States to Apple TV.

Apple TV Gives Different Types of Streaming Content

The strategy allows Apple to position its television service as more than a home for original series. A combination of original productions, major sports and licensed Hollywood movies could make the subscription more useful to households looking for a broader entertainment catalog.

Whether the newly added movies become a permanent part of the service remains uncertain.

For now, however, subscribers have an opportunity to revisit several well-known Hollywood films without paying an additional rental or purchase charge.
