In a move that underscores mounting pressures in the casual dining industry, an applebee's franchisee files for bankruptcy, setting off a wave of restaurant closures across Georgia and Florida.

Neighborhood Restaurant Partners Florida filed for Chapter 11 protection on March 24 in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Georgia, citing rising costs and ongoing financial challenges that have chipped away at its once-robust operations.

Court filings reveal the company is carrying liabilities estimated between $10 million and $50 million — a financial burden that has grown heavier over time, like a slow leak finally breaching the hull.

Closures Spread Across Georgia and Florida

The bankruptcy filing has already led to at least 10 restaurant closures tied to restructuring efforts. Among them is an Applebee's location in Albany, Georgia, at 637 Westover Blvd., now absent from the franchisee’s list of active sites. It stands as the only confirmed closure in Georgia so far.

Across both states, shuttered locations mark a visible contraction of the brand’s footprint under this operator.

From Growth to Decline

According to court documents, the franchisee once thrived after acquiring dozens of locations in the early 2010s. But by 2015, sales began to slide — a downturn that gradually deepened into sustained financial distress.

Executives pointed to a convergence of challenges that accelerated the decline:

• The global impact of the COVID-19 pandemic
• Inflation and escalating operating expenses
• Business strategies and promotions that failed to deliver results

Together, these factors formed a perfect storm, eroding profitability and forcing difficult decisions.

Shrinking Portfolio and Future Sale Plans

By late March, the company operated 53 Applebee’s locations — a reduced count following a series of closures. Nine restaurants were shut down in 2025, with five more closing in the first quarter of 2026.

Now, the franchisee plans to sell its remaining restaurants through the bankruptcy process, with a potential sale expected in mid-May.

Both Applebee's and its parent company Dine Brands are involved in the proceedings and may take part in the sale.

Company officials said no additional closures are planned at this time as restructuring continues, though uncertainty still lingers over the brand’s regional future.
