A scary shooting incident took place Monday afternoon along Memorial Drive in Cambridge, MA, when a person using a firearm reportedly opened fire on vehicles that were passing nearby and then himself became the target of fire from a Massachusetts State Police trooper.

This incident reportedly broke out around 1:30 p.m. in an area close to the intersection of River Street. A lot of police personnel were dispatched in order to stop the gunfire incident, during which a gunman was seen shooting at passing vehicles.

One driver told WBZ-TV he stopped his car, crouched down, and watched as the gunman approached:

“I dipped back into my car and ducked behind my dashboard… State trooper pulled up directly on the side of me, got out, got behind his car… and got in the gunfight with him.”

A woman driving a small school van to pick up children with special needs said she and another woman jumped out and fled through nearby bushes as bullets flew.

“I was running for my life,” she said, adding that she heard at least 15 shots.

Another resident on the 18th floor of a nearby apartment building reported hearing around 30 rapid gunshots and seeing the gunman screaming in the street.

State Police and Cambridge officers swarmed the area. At least one person was treated for gunshot injuries. No officers were shot, and authorities say there is no ongoing threat to the public.

What began as an ordinary afternoon commute along the scenic Charles River quickly turned into a nightmare for drivers caught in the path of an armed suspect. The speed with which the State Trooper engaged and neutralized the threat likely prevented far greater loss of life on a busy roadway.

The fact that the gunman was actively targeting random passing cars raises disturbing questions about his motives and mental state. Police are investigating whether this incident is connected to an earlier event in Boston.

Memorial Drive, a major thoroughfare minutes from Boston, remains partially closed as investigators process the scene. Governor Maura Healey praised first responders for acting quickly to secure the area and protect the public.

This shooting serves as another stark reminder of how quickly everyday life can turn dangerous in America — and how thin the line is between normalcy and chaos when someone decides to unleash violence in public.
