Nearly two decades of silence. Then, a knock on a door in Washington State.

On a quiet Thursday morning, May 21, 2025, detectives finally closed in on the man they believe gunned down two people inside a North Carolina bottling plant in 2008, a case so cold it had outlasted careers, grieved families, and an entire era of forensic technology.

Johnny Steven Talbert, now 43, was arrested without incident and charged with two counts of first-degree murder in connection with the killings of Donna Barnhardt and Darrell Noles, the victims at the heart of what investigators and locals came to call the "Sun Drop Murders."

A Bloody Morning No One Forgot

It was 10 a.m. on June 13, 2008, when Concord police raced to the Sun Drop Bottling Company on Old-Salisbury Concord Road, near the intersection of Branchview Drive and Cabarrus Avenue. What they found inside would haunt the department for nearly two decades.

Two people lay dead from apparent gunshot wounds.

Donna Barnhardt, 59, was a longtime office manager at the company. She knew every corner of that building. Darrell Noles, 44, had simply walked through the door that morning to apply for a job, a routine moment that turned fatal.

Both died at the scene.

Cash, Chaos, and a Vanishing Suspect

Detectives believe the shooter killed Barnhardt and Noles, then stole money from the front office before fleeing on foot toward Cabarrus Avenue.

Witnesses described a Black man with a slender build, standing between 5'7" and 6' tall, weighing roughly 170 to 180 pounds, and wearing a white shirt and blue jeans.

Officers flooded the area. They canvassed for hours, collected evidence, and gathered witness statements. By September 2008, investigators had released a composite sketch of the suspect.

Then the tips came. Hundreds of them.

None were enough.

The Case That Refused to Die

The Sun Drop Murders went cold. But the detectives working the case never stopped.

In the years that followed, investigators continued to test and resubmit evidence as forensic technology advanced. Each new generation of lab tools offered another chance to find what earlier methods had missed.

That persistence paid off.

The Break That Changed Everything

In late 2025, a crack appeared in the wall. Through a systematic reexamination of existing evidence and the pursuit of previously undeveloped leads, detectives were able to do what had seemed impossible for nearly two decades: they identified a suspect.

His name: Johnny Steven Talbert.

Talbert had since relocated to Washington State, nearly 2,800 miles from Concord. Concord Police quickly contacted the Port Angeles Police Department, and the two departments worked together to build their case.

An arrest warrant was obtained. The net was closing.

On May 21, detectives moved in and took Talbert into custody without a struggle.

Charged and Behind Bars

Talbert now faces two counts of first-degree murder and one count of robbery with a firearm or other dangerous weapon.

He is currently being held without bond at the Clallam County Jail in Washington State, awaiting extradition back to Concord, where the families of Donna Barnhardt and Darrell Noles have waited nearly 18 years for justice.

For a community that never forgot two lives lost on an ordinary Friday morning, the wait may finally be nearing its end.
