Astronomers Witness Birth of a Magnetar in Explosive Cosmic Event

Astronomers witness birth of a magnetar

For the first time in recorded observation, scientists have watched the dramatic moment when a powerful stellar corpse emerged from a dying star. In a breakthrough discovery, astronomers witness birth of a magnetar, confirming a long-standing theory linking these ultra-magnetic objects to the universe’s most luminous supernova explosions.

The discovery provides the strongest evidence yet that superluminous supernovassome of the brightest explosions ever seen—are powered by newborn magnetars spinning deep within the wreckage of collapsed stars.

A Violent Stellar Death Sparks a Powerful Cosmic Engine

The event began with the catastrophic death of a massive star, which collapsed under its own gravity after exhausting its nuclear fuel. This process, known as core collapse, can produce either a neutron star or a black hole.

But in this rare case, astronomers witnessed something more extraordinary: the formation of a magnetar, an exotic neutron star with the most intense magnetic fields known in the universe.

Magnetars possess magnetic forces 100 to 1,000 times stronger than typical neutron stars, making them some of the most extreme objects ever observed.

The observation, tied to a spectacular stellar explosion, finally provides the missing confirmation scientists have searched for since magnetars were first identified in the early 2000s.

Linking Magnetars to Superluminous Supernovas

The discovery emerged from observations of a supernova labeled SN 2024afav, which erupted roughly one billion light-years from Earth.

Astronomers say the findings confirm theories proposed by astrophysicists Dan Kasen, Lars Bildsten, and Stanford Woosley, who suggested that massive stars—about 25 times the mass of the suncould collapse into rapidly spinning magnetars that power extraordinarily bright supernova explosions.

These events shine up to ten times brighter than normal supernovas and persist far longer,” researchers said.

Until now, the magnetar at the center of such explosions remained hidden beneath expanding debris—like an engine roaring behind thick cosmic curtains.

Spinning Like a Cosmic Ice Skater

When a star collapses into a neutron star roughly 12 miles (20 kilometers) across, physics takes over in spectacular fashion.

Just as an Olympic ice skater spins faster by pulling their arms inward, the shrinking stellar core spins more rapidly as its diameter decreases. Some newborn neutron stars rotate hundreds of times each second.

These objects emit powerful beams of radiation from their poles, sweeping across space like a lighthouse beam. When this occurs, the object is classified as a pulsar.

Magnetars go even further. Their immense magnetic fields accelerate particles and blast them into the expanding cloud of stellar debris surrounding them. This interaction pumps extra energy into the explosion, making the supernova glow far brighter than usual.

A Supernova’s “Chirps” Reveal the Hidden Engine

The breakthrough occurred when astronomers analyzed unusual signals in the brightness pattern—known as a light curve—of SN 2024afav.

The supernova was first spotted in December 2024 by the Las Cumbres Observatory, which uses 27 telescopes worldwide to monitor cosmic events.

Researchers tracked the explosion for 200 days, expecting its brightness to fade smoothly as most supernovas do.

Instead, they detected a puzzling pattern.

After peaking roughly 50 days after the explosion, the light curve began oscillating with four distinct pulses, which scientists described as chirps.”

While similar brightness bumps have been seen in other supernovas, none had ever displayed four chirps like this.

Einstein’s Gravity Leaves Its Signature

Researchers believe the strange signals originated from matter falling back toward the newborn magnetar after the explosion.

This material likely formed a swirling accretion disk around the compact object. Because the debris from the explosion is uneven, the disk likely tilted relative to the magnetar’s spin axis.

That misalignment triggered a phenomenon predicted by Albert Einstein.

According to general relativity, massive rotating objects drag space itself around them—a process called Lense-Thirring effect.

This effect caused the disk to wobble like a tilted spinning top.

As the wobbling disk periodically blocked or reflected light from the magnetar, the system produced a strobing pattern—turning the supernova into a cosmic lighthouse whose pulses were detected as chirps in the data.

First Supernova Explained by Relativity

Lead study author Joseph Farah said the team explored multiple explanations before settling on Einstein’s theory.

We tested several possibilities,” Farah said, “but only Lense-Thirring precession matched the timing perfectly.”

That finding marks a historic milestone: the first time general relativity has been required to explain the mechanics of a supernova.

The Smoking Gun Discovery

By analyzing the signals, researchers calculated that the central object spins about 238 times per second.

Even more astonishing, its magnetic field measures roughly 300 trillion times stronger than Earth’s magnetosphere, confirming that astronomers had indeed captured the birth of a magnetar.

This is definitive evidence for a magnetar forming as the result of a superluminous supernova core collapse,” said Alex Filippenko.

For decades, scientists suspected such an engine powered these dazzling explosions.

Now, at last, astronomers witness birth of a magnetarand the cosmic mystery behind the universe’s brightest stellar blasts may finally be solved.
