WASHINGTON — A newly published post by Harvard astrophysicist Avi Loeb has injected a consequential new tension into the UAP disclosure debate: who gets to define the evidence, shape public expectations, and ultimately claim authority over the answer?

Loeb’s post responds to NewsNation journalist Ross Coulthart’s reported claims that the Department of War may be operating a covert effort—allegedly authorized by President Donald Trump—to intercept and recover anomalous objects near White Sands Missile Range and near Juárez, Mexico. Coulthart described alleged use of high-power microwave systems against objects said to display extraordinary flight characteristics.

Those claims, if true, would carry extraordinary national-security, diplomatic, scientific and legal consequences. But Loeb expressly acknowledged the essential fact: they have not been corroborated by administration officials and could be “fact or fiction.”

That caution is important. So is what followed.

Loeb argued that, if objects or materials have in fact been recovered, scientists should receive access to physical materials and digital data so they can determine whether the objects are natural phenomena, human technology, or something more exotic. He wrote that a detailed analysis by the UAP Science Advisory Council “under my leadership” could make that determination straightforward.

The proposition that evidence should be tested rather than mythologized is difficult to dispute. If the government possesses unusual material, the public interest would be served by rigorous chain-of-custody procedures, independent laboratory testing, reproducible methods, peer scrutiny where classification permits, and transparent reporting of what can safely be disclosed.

But Loeb’s post also illustrates a problem that should concern anyone who wants the UAP issue treated as a serious national-security matter rather than an endless contest of competing personalities.

Loeb is not simply an outside commentator. He has been appointed to chair the UAP Science Advisory Council, which is intended to provide scientific guidance to a government UAP governance structure involving the White House, Pentagon, intelligence community and other agencies. That role gives his public statements added weight. It also creates a heightened obligation to distinguish clearly between verified information, scientific hypotheses, personal advocacy, and institutional priorities. Associated Press

The legal and governance issue is not that Loeb should remain silent. Nor is it an accusation that he has done anything improper. It is that an adviser connected to a government-backed UAP process should avoid appearing to prejudge a journalist’s reporting, position his own team as the default answer before evidence is produced, or leave the public with the impression that the scientific conclusion is already waiting for one particular group to validate it.

Coulthart’s claims demand verification, not dismissal—and not adoption. The same principle applies to Loeb’s proposed path forward. A credible investigation cannot begin with the assumption that a recovered object is alien technology, nor with the assumption that any one council, laboratory, or public figure is uniquely qualified to settle the question.

If the White Sands account is accurate, the legal issues would be immediate. Any cross-border operation implicating Mexico could raise sovereignty and diplomatic concerns. The use of directed-energy systems within the United States would invite questions about operational authority, environmental and safety protocols, congressional oversight, classification, and the evidentiary handling of recovered materials. If the objects were human-made, the stakes could involve espionage, airspace security, export controls, or a previously unknown defense technology.

If the story is not accurate, the episode is still revealing. It shows how quickly extraordinary assertions can become the basis for public expectations, institutional positioning and calls for access to alleged materials that may not exist.

That is why the next step cannot be another round of insinuation, personal branding or narrative warfare. The public deserves a formal response from the appropriate authorities: either a carefully limited confirmation that an operation occurred, or a clear statement that the reported account cannot be substantiated.

Loeb is right about one central point: new, high-quality data is better than decades of rumor, incomplete records and bureaucratic obstruction. But the collection and analysis of that data should be governed by independence, documented methodology, conflict safeguards and meaningful external review—not by the confidence of any single scientific leader.

The UAP question may involve the most profound discovery in human history—or it may lead to more ordinary explanations. Either way, the American public cannot be asked to place its trust in competing assurances. It deserves evidence.
