Eight people are believed dead after a U.S. Air Force B-52 Stratofortress crashed shortly after takeoff at Edwards Air Force Base in California Monday morning.

The bomber went down at approximately 11:20 a.m. Pacific Time. It was on a routine test flight. Officials said initial indications suggest the crash was not survivable. Witnesses reported a massive plume of black smoke rising from the airfield. Nothing remained of the aircraft.

Eight on Board. None Expected to Survive.

A standard B-52H carries five crew members, but this aircraft had eight people aboard, suggesting the additional three were test personnel assigned to the modernization mission.

The Air Force has not released the names of those aboard. Next-of-kin notifications are pending.

Edwards Air Force Base closed its airfield immediately following the crash. All inbound aircraft were diverted. Non-commercial visitor passes were suspended to allow the installation to focus entirely on emergency response.

America's Oldest Active Bomber

The B-52 has been the backbone of U.S. long-range airpower since the 1950s. Built by Boeing, it is capable of reaching altitudes of 50,000 feet and carrying both conventional and nuclear weapons.

76 B-52s remain in the Air Force inventory. The aircraft involved, registered as 60-0061, had recently undergone a radar modernization and flew from Port San Antonio to Edwards in December 2025 as part of that upgrade program.

The last B-52 crash occurred in 2016 at Andersen Air Force Base in Guam, where seven crew members were injured but survived. This is the first fatal B-52 crash since 1994.

The Air Force's Premier Test Lab

Edwards Air Force Base sits in the Mojave Desert in Kern County, approximately 100 miles north of Los Angeles. It serves as the Air Force's premier flight-test center, where new aircraft systems and upgrades are evaluated before wider deployment.

The B-52s stationed at Edwards are not assigned to combat missions, they exist to test new capabilities, including a major program to replace the fleet's engines with modern Rolls-Royce turbofans and update its avionics systems.

The Investigation Will Take Months

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. No cause has been identified or confirmed by officials. The Air Force is expected to convene a safety investigation board, a process that typically takes months. Access to the crash site remains restricted.
