A seven-month-old girl was fatally shot while sitting in her stroller Wednesday afternoon in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York City police said. Authorities believe the infant was an unintended victim of a suspected gang-related attack.

Shooting Unfolds on Busy Street

Surveillance footage shows two men riding a motorbike against traffic when the passenger pulled out a gun and fired at least two rounds, New York City Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch told reporters. The bike crashed shortly afterward, and the suspected shooter was apprehended. A manhunt remains underway for the driver.

“A life that had barely begun was taken in an instant,” Mayor Zohran Mamdani said, calling the tragedy a stark reminder of the city’s ongoing struggle with gun violence.

Several adults and children, including two in strollers, were present at a street corner during the shooting. The baby’s parents ran to a nearby shop, where they realized their child had been struck, according to CBS.

“All the kids started ducking in the corner. The family went to the store, and the mom started screaming when she noticed the baby bleeding from her head,” witness Bernius Maldonado told CBS. Footage inside the store, published by the New York Post, shows the mother discovering the injuries and reacting hysterically, clasping her hands behind her head and jumping up and down.

Emergency Response and Investigation

Emergency services were called at 1:21 p.m. local time. The infant was rushed to Woodhull Hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Police reported no other fatalities or injuries in the incident.

Tisch described the tragedy as “unspeakable,” saying, “As a mother, I cannot imagine the pain this family is feeling or the grief they now carry.”

Police said both suspects were thrown from the moped during the crash. The passenger, believed to be the shooter based on clothing and appearance, was taken into custody after being treated at Brooklyn Hospital. The driver remains at large. No charges have been filed in connection with the shooting.
