Batman Is Real and He Lives in Mexico, Duct-Taping Thieves to Lampposts While Cops Chase Him Instead

Several men are tied up with duct tape to posts and walls in a dim outdoor area, with motorcycles nearby and a cartoon mouse sticker on the right.

A masked vigilante in the Mexican state of Jalisco has taken the law into his own hands after motorcycle theft spiraled out of control and residents say authorities refused to act. Locals are calling him the Batman of Lagos de Moreno, and he is becoming a folk hero.

A City Fed Up With Crime

Lagos de Moreno sits in the heart of Jalisco, one of Mexico's most turbulent states. For months, residents watched motorcycle thefts climb with no meaningful police response. Victims filed reports. Nothing happened. Bikes disappeared from driveways, from storefronts, from right outside people's homes. The thieves kept operating in broad daylight because they believed no one would stop them.

Someone decided to prove them wrong.

The Batman Strikes

Starting on June 13, the Batman of Lagos de Moreno began delivering his own brand of justice. He tracked down suspected motorcycle thieves, bound them in duct tape, and secured them to lampposts along public streets for the entire neighborhood to see. He did not stop at one. He did not stop at two. By the time local media caught on, at least five men had been taped to poles across the city.

He left the allegedly stolen motorcycles propped up right next to each bound suspect, turning each scene into a public exhibit of the crime. Pink notes were pinned above the men listing the specific offenses they were accused of committing. Each display was a statement. This is what was stolen. This is who stole it. And this is what happens when the system fails.

The Word "Thief" Written Across Their Faces

Mexican journalist Luis Cardenas shared photos on X that quickly spread across social media. The images showed the suspected thieves bound tightly, with the Spanish word "ratero," meaning thief, written across their faces. As if that were not humiliating enough, the vigilante had also drawn exaggerated mustaches and cat whiskers on the men, giving each scene a theatrical, absurdist quality that made the photos impossible to scroll past.

Cardenas wrote that after being abandoned by the authorities, an anonymous hero had risen to hunt down motorcycle thieves in Jalisco. He had taken down five in ten days and the people of Lagos de Moreno had given him a name.

Police Are Looking for the Wrong Person

In a move that has infuriated many residents, local police treated the bound men for their injuries and then turned their attention not to the rampant theft problem, but to tracking down the vigilante himself. They want to arrest him.

The public reaction has been swift and overwhelmingly negative toward the authorities. Many people online openly cheered for the Batman and mocked the idea that police would investigate a man doing duct tape justice while letting actual thieves roam free.

One Reddit user captured the mood perfectly, writing that they wanted to send the Batman money so he would not have to buy his own duct tape. The comment racked up thousands of upvotes.

A Country Drowning in Crime

The Batman of Lagos de Moreno did not appear in a vacuum. He is a symptom of a country where the legal system has hemorrhaged public trust. According to the Council on Foreign Relations' Global Conflict Tracker, Mexico records more than 30,000 crime-related deaths every single year. The overwhelming majority of those deaths are tied to organized crime.

In nearby Michoacan, women in rural communities have begun forming armed self-defense groups to protect themselves from the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, one of the most powerful and violent criminal organizations in the country. These groups have reportedly built homemade armored vehicles and set up roadblocks to hold off cartel gunmen responsible for a surge in regional homicides. The cartel has been described in reports as bloodthirsty, and the women arming themselves against it have drawn international attention for their courage.

The Batman of Lagos de Moreno is part of this same larger story. Ordinary people, pushed past their limits, deciding to act because waiting for help means waiting forever.

Even Mexico's Security Chief Got the Batman Name

There is a remarkable footnote to this story. Mexico's own national security chief, Omar Hamid Garcia Harfuch, was also tagged with the Batman label in 2025. Harfuch built his reputation taking the fight directly to cartels and surviving a brazen assassination attempt that left many of his close associates dead. The fact that both a masked street vigilante with a roll of duct tape and a senior government official carry the same nickname says something profound about what Mexicans are looking for in their leaders and protectors.

They want someone who actually shows up.

Why This Story Matters Beyond Mexico

The Batman of Lagos de Moreno would be easy to dismiss as a bizarre internet story, a strange curiosity from a country with unique problems. But what he represents is universal. When people stop believing that institutions will protect them, they stop waiting for those institutions to act. Vigilante justice is never a clean solution. It bypasses due process. Innocent people can be wrongly targeted. The duct-taped men in these photos have not been convicted of anything in a court of law.

And yet, across social media in dozens of countries, people who have never set foot in Jalisco are cheering this man on. They recognize the frustration. They understand the desperation. They know what it feels like to report a crime and have nothing happen.

The Batman of Lagos de Moreno is not just a local story. He is a mirror.

The Mystery Continues

As of now, the vigilante has not been identified. The police investigation is reportedly ongoing but has produced no arrest. Motorcycle theft in Lagos de Moreno continues. And somewhere out there, a man with duct tape and a grudge is watching.

The Batman of Lagos de Moreno is still out there. And judging by the public reaction, a lot of people hope he stays that way.
