Beach Closures Expand Across Long Island as Shark Sightings and Bacteria Warnings Disrupt Fourth of July Weekend

Pedestrians stroll along a sunny boardwalk lined with waving American flags along the railing.

Beach Closures were spread across parts of New York just ahead of the busy Fourth of July holiday after multiple shark sightings and elevated bacteria levels prompted officials to restrict swimming at several popular destinations. Authorities issued warnings at beaches on Long Island and in New York City as millions of visitors prepared to celebrate the holiday along the coast.

Officials say the temporary closures are precautionary measures designed to protect public safety while shark activity is monitored and water quality improves following recent heavy rainfall.

Shark Sightings Trigger Beach Closures

One of the most significant shark sightings occurred Thursday morning near Point Lookout in the Town of Hempstead, where officials reported a shark measuring approximately nine feet long swimming offshore.

The sighting prompted authorities to raise red warning flags and temporarily suspend swimming along roughly a one-mile stretch of shoreline in both directions from where the shark was observed.

The Town of Hempstead's Shark Patrol deployed drones and patrol boats to monitor the area, while lifeguards kept beachgoers out of the water until the mandatory safety period expired.

Officials said several lifeguards and beach visitors independently reported seeing the shark.

Rockaway Beach Remains on Alert

The New York City Parks Department also reported multiple shark sightings near Rockaway Beach, one of the city's most popular summer destinations.

Located in the borough of Queens, Rockaway Beach stretches for several miles along the Atlantic Ocean and attracts more than 11 million visitors each summer. The beach is well known for its surfing, boardwalk, bicycle paths and family-friendly recreation areas, making it one of New York City's busiest public beaches.

Officials warned that intermittent swimming closures could occur if sharks continue approaching the shoreline. Beachgoers have been urged to follow all instructions from lifeguards and park staff.

Marine experts note that shark sightings typically increase between June and September as warming ocean temperatures bring schools of bunker fish and other prey closer to shore. Sharks naturally follow these food sources into nearshore waters.

Officials Offer Beach Safety Advice

With holiday crowds expected to remain heavy throughout the weekend, New York officials are encouraging swimmers to take extra precautions.

Safety recommendations include:

  • Avoid swimming near schools of fish, seals or diving seabirds.
  • Stay out of murky water where visibility is poor.
  • Avoid entering the ocean at dawn, dusk or nighttime, when sharks are generally more active.
  • Swim in groups whenever possible.
  • Remain close to shore and always obey lifeguard instructions.

Officials emphasize that shark encounters remain extremely rare despite the recent sightings.

Bacteria Prompts Additional Beach Closures

Sharks are not the only concern affecting Long Island beaches.

The Nassau County Department of Health temporarily closed swimming areas at Biltmore Beach Club and Philip Healey Beach in Massapequa after routine water testing detected bacteria levels above New York State safety standards.

Health officials said the elevated bacteria levels were likely caused by stormwater runoff following heavy rainfall.

Exposure to contaminated water can increase the risk of gastrointestinal illnesses and infections involving the eyes, ears, nose and throat.

Swimming will remain prohibited until follow-up testing confirms that bacteria levels have returned to acceptable standards.

More Beach Closures: Biltmore Beach Club and Philip Healey Beach

Biltmore Beach Club is a private waterfront recreation facility located in Massapequa, offering swimming, boating and family-oriented amenities during the summer season.

Nearby Philip Healey Beach, a public beach operated by the Town of Oyster Bay, is a popular destination for local residents seeking calm waters, picnic facilities and waterfront recreation along the South Shore of Long Island.

Both beaches are periodically monitored by health officials throughout the summer to ensure water quality meets state health standards before swimmers are allowed to return.

Additional swimming advisories were also issued for Tides Beach in Rocky Point and Ronkonkoma Beach in Ronkonkoma after similar bacteria concerns.

Officials say the advisories will be lifted only after laboratory testing confirms that water quality has improved and the beaches are once again safe for public use.
