BLACK ROCK DESERT, Nev. — Burning Man 2026 is nearing its conclusion under unusually somber circumstances after organizers confirmed that a second participant died during the sprawling Nevada desert gathering.

Craigh Mann, 60, was found dead by campmates inside his camp at approximately 3 p.m. Saturday, September 5, according to an official update from the Burning Man Project. Organizers have not publicly identified a cause of death or provided additional details about what happened.

“Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with the participant’s family, friends, campmates, and all those affected by this loss,” the organization said.

Mann’s death came only two days after another participant, described as a man in his mid-50s, suffered a medical emergency at Black Rock City.

Organizers said lifesaving measures were immediately attempted before the man was transported to the festival’s onsite emergency-care center, where he was pronounced dead. His identity had not been publicly released because his family had not yet been notified.

Pershing County Sheriff Coroner Jerry Allen told the San Francisco Chronicle that deputies received a report Thursday of a man found unresponsive on one of Black Rock City’s streets. Authorities did not see evidence of external foul play, although a final determination on the cause of death remained subject to the medical examiner’s findings.

A Difficult Week on the Playa

The two deaths come during a challenging year for an event that draws tens of thousands of people to the temporary desert city.

Rain turned portions of the playa into thick mud Friday, forcing organizers to temporarily close entry and exit routes. People who had not yet reached the event were urged to remain in Reno while conditions improved.

The muddy conditions also produced an unusual exit for DJ Diplo, who documented himself walking roughly six miles through the desert to reach a road after transportation was disrupted. The scene recalled his highly publicized 2023 Burning Man escape with comedian Chris Rock after another round of severe rain.

Safety concerns extended beyond the weather.

Earlier in the week, a festivalgoer was injured after falling from the 55-foot Nest Tower at the Square One camp. According to reporting cited by the Chronicle, the man fell approximately two levels, struck a metal crossbar and was rescued before being transported to the festival’s temporary hospital.

Law enforcement activity has also been significant. Allen said authorities had made 34 arrests involving alleged drug sales or trafficking as of Friday morning, along with one domestic-violence arrest. He emphasized that deputies were not simply targeting participants for personal drug use.

Missionary Camp Eviction Sparks Dispute

Another controversy emerged when Burning Man organizers removed the Christian missionary camp Shift the Atmosphere.

Burning Man spokesperson Dominique Debucquoy-Dodley said the camp had received multiple warnings over alleged privacy and consent violations, including nonconsensual filming, but continued violating festival policies.

Members of the missionary group disputed that characterization and alleged they were targeted because of their Christian faith. Their accusations have added another layer of controversy to an already eventful Burn.

Last Year’s Homicide Remains Unresolved

The 2026 gathering also comes one year after the killing of 37-year-old Vadim Kruglov, who was found fatally stabbed inside a tent on August 30, 2025. No arrest has been publicly announced in that investigation.

The circumstances surrounding this year’s two deaths are separate from that homicide, and authorities have not publicly suggested that Mann’s death involved criminal activity.

For participants affected by the fatalities, Burning Man has made crisis-support resources available around the clock through Black Rock Rangers and the Emergency Services Department’s Crisis Support team.

As Black Rock City prepares to disappear once again into the Nevada desert, the final days of Burning Man 2026 are unfolding less as an uncomplicated celebration and more as a reminder of the real-world risks that accompany one of America’s most unusual temporary communities.
