Carl Sagan’s Flatland Theory Finds New Life As Lawmakers Float Interdimensional Explanation For UFOs

By Samuel López | USA Herald - A concept once confined to classrooms and late-night science programming is now being pulled into the center of a rapidly evolving national conversation on UFO disclosure. The framework developed and popularized byĀ Carl Sagan—built on the logic ofĀ Flatland—is reemerging as policymakers and public officials begin exploring explanations for unidentified aerial phenomena that extend beyond conventional aerospace theory.

At the forefront of that discussion isĀ Anna Paulina Luna, who has signaled a willingness to examine not just the existence of UAPs, but the nature of their origin.

Luna and others have suggested that the traditional extraterrestrial narrative—physical craft traveling from distant star systems—may not fully account for what is being observed. Instead, a more complex hypothesis is being cautiously introduced into the public sphere: the possibility that these phenomena could be interdimensional.

That idea, once relegated to speculative science fiction, aligns in a surprising way with Sagan’s teaching model.

Sagan’s use of Flatland was never about aliens. It was about perception. In his teaching, a two-dimensional being cannot comprehend a three-dimensional object except as a distorted slice of its full form. Sagan expanded that analogy to suggest that if higher dimensions exist beyond human perception, interactions from those dimensions would not appear as complete, stable objects. They would appear fragmented, shifting, and at times physically impossible.

Now consider the growing body of UAP reports acknowledged by institutions such asĀ NASA, the FBIĀ and theĀ Department of Defense. Pilots and advanced sensor systems have documented objects that accelerate without visible propulsion, change direction instantaneously, and in some cases appear to materialize and disappear without explanation. These characteristics have resisted traditional analysis, leaving investigators with data points that do not comfortably fit within known models of physics or engineering.

The interdimensional hypothesis attempts to bridge that gap—not by discarding science, but by expanding the framework through which the data is interpreted.

From a legal and investigative standpoint, the implications are significant. Evidence must always be evaluated within the limits of observation. If those limits are inherently constrained—whether by human perception or by the dimensional structure of reality itself—then the conclusions drawn from that evidence must remain open to reinterpretation. Sagan’s Flatland model provides a structured way to approach that problem without resorting to speculation detached from logic.

What lawmakers like Luna appear to be doing is testing the boundaries of that framework in a public policy setting. The goal is not to declare that UAPs are definitively interdimensional, but to acknowledge that existing explanations may be incomplete. By introducing alternative models into the discussion, policymakers are effectively widening the scope of inquiry.

That shift is subtle but important.

For years, the debate over UFOs was framed as a binary question: either these objects were misidentified human technology, or they were extraterrestrial visitors traveling through space. The interdimensional concept introduces a third possibility—one that does not rely on long-distance travel, but instead on proximity within a layered reality that we do not fully perceive.

In practical terms, this could explain why certain UAP encounters appear localized, why objects can seemingly evade detection despite advanced tracking systems, and why physical interactions, when reported, often defy conventional reality. If these phenomena are not bound to our three-dimensional constraints in the same way we are, then their behavior would naturally appear anomalous.

It is important, however, to maintain clarity. There is no confirmed evidence that UAPs are interdimensional entities. What exists is a growing acknowledgment that current explanations are insufficient to account for all observed data. The introduction of interdimensional theory into official discussions reflects that gap—not a conclusion, but an expansion of inquiry.

Sagan’s contribution to this conversation is not that he predicted any of this. It is that he provided a disciplined way to think about it. His Flatland analogy removes the emotional and speculative elements often associated with UFO discussions and replaces them with a logical structure grounded in dimensional theory and perceptual limits.

As disclosure efforts continue to unfold—through hearings, reports, and ongoing investigations—the public is being asked to engage with ideas that were once considered purely academic. The challenge is to do so without abandoning critical thinking or evidentiary standards.

From where I stand, analyzing this as both a journalist and a legal professional, the most compelling aspect of this development is not the theory itself, but the willingness of public officials to explore it openly. That alone marks a departure from decades of dismissal and silence.

Whether the interdimensional hypothesis ultimately holds weight will depend on the evidence that emerges in the months and years ahead. But the fact that it is being discussed at all signals a broader shift—one that aligns, perhaps unexpectedly, with the intellectual groundwork laid by Sagan decades ago.

He didn’t claim to have the answers. What he offered was a method of inquiry.

And in a moment where the questions are becoming more complex by the day, that method may prove to be more relevant than ever.
