March 31 (UPI) — Fire crews in New York rescued a cat that had been trapped for two days inside the wall of a residential basement, officials said.

The Springville Volunteer Fire Department was called to the home of Jessica Tallant over the weekend after she discovered that Freya, a 5-year-old cat owned by her mother, had somehow become stuck within the basement wall.

Tallant explained that she had been caring for the cat for several days when Freya suddenly disappeared. After searching, she determined the animal had ended up inside the wall.

Photos taken by the homeowner show firefighters working carefully to pinpoint the cat’s location and carry out the rescue.

"We did try a thermal imaging camera, and it would not pick up the small amount of body heat from the small cat. So we found out where it was, isolated a small area of drywall to be cut so we wouldn't ruin the person's whole walls, and it worked. Once we got that out of there, another one of our firemen got in there and grabbed the cat out," 2nd Assistant Fire Chief Phil Drozd told WGRZ-TV.
