Catholic Trump Voters Torn as President’s Clash With Pope Sparks Backlash

A growing unease is rippling through America’s Catholic community as President Donald Trump’s escalating feud with Pope Leo leaves even his most loyal religious supporters questioning where faith ends and politics begins.

Inside St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City, a sermon centered on peace and faith failed to calm anxious parishioners. Many walked out still shaken, grappling with what they see as an extraordinary and deeply personal conflict between two of the world’s most powerful figures.

“I like Donald a lot, but he needs to calm down,” said Lola Reese after attending Sunday Mass at St. Patrick’s.

Reese, who grew up Catholic in New Orleans, said the tension cuts deeper than politics.

“The president’s back-and-forth with the pope might hurt his relationship with his supporters,” she said, calling on Trump to “back off and kind of calm down his little bitty, tiny streak of a little meanness here and there.”

Supporters Turn Critical

Reese is not alone.

Despite strong Catholic backing in the 2024 election, where nearly six in 10 Catholic voters supported Trump according to a CNN exit poll, frustration is now surfacing within that base.

Anita Bauman, a Catholic Trump voter from Pennsylvania, did not mince words.

“I don’t think it helps the president at all,” she said, describing his remarks as “colossally stupid.”

Bauman emphasized that while she supported Trump’s actions in Iran, she drew a clear line when it came to attacking the pope.

“I do think that things needed to be done in Iran,” she said. “I think that regime was dangerous, but I don’t think picking a fight with the pope or trying to school the pope on theology is a good idea at all.”

Unprecedented Rift Escalates

The clash erupted after Pope Leo publicly criticized Trump’s rhetoric surrounding the US-Israeli war with Iran, calling it “truly unacceptable” and urging the president to find an “off-ramp.”

In a rare move, the pope referred to a sitting US president by name, intensifying the moment.

Trump fired back on social media.

“Pope Leo is WEAK on Crime, and terrible for Foreign Policy.”

He further accused the pope of holding positions the pontiff has not publicly expressed, including claims about Iran’s nuclear ambitions and US foreign policy.

The situation escalated again when Trump posted an AI-generated image depicting himself as a Christ-like figure healing a sick person. The image, featuring American flags and eagles, was later deleted, with Trump claiming he believed it showed him as a doctor.

Vice President JD Vance added fuel to the fire, urging the pope to be “careful” when discussing theology during a Turning Point USA event.

The Pope Refuses to Engage

Despite the mounting tension, Pope Leo has made it clear he is not interested in a political feud.

“It was looked at as if I was trying to debate again the president, which is not in my interest at all,” he said during a flight from Cameroon to Angola.

“I have no fear of the Trump administration or speaking out loudly of the message of the Gospel.”

The pope has continued to emphasize peace, echoing past Vatican criticism of war and US immigration policies, which he previously called “extremely disrespectful.”

Historical Echoes Raise Alarm

For some Catholics, the conflict feels unprecedented and deeply troubling.

Chase Lerew, a 24-year-old recent convert, drew a stark historical comparison.

“We haven’t seen an authority figure trying to exert this much control on the papacy since the Avignon Papacy,” he said.

“Seeing a lot of Catholics kind of bow down to a secular authority instead of a religious one has been disheartening.”

Church Leaders Push Back

Prominent Catholic leaders are also stepping in.

“I am disheartened that the president chose to write such disparaging words about the Holy Father,” said Archbishop Paul S. Coakley. “Pope Leo is not his rival; nor is the pope a politician.”

Political voices have joined the backlash.

Sen. Mark Kelly called the attacks “abhorrent” in a post on X.

‘Hurtful to Us’

For many everyday Catholics, the controversy feels personal.

“I think that our president does things off the cuff a lot,” said Mary Meehan, a longtime churchgoer in Brooklyn.

She admitted feeling conflicted.

“As Catholics, we all love God above all things,” she said. “And that’s hurtful to us when we see him doing that because we feel sorry for the president not realizing the pain he’s giving to all the people that love not only God but love him so much, too.”

Monsignor David Cassato described the moment bluntly.

“It’s a very strange time, in the world and in the world of politics.”

Still, he expressed hope both leaders could find common ground, saying he believes “both men ultimately want peace.”

Political Risk Ahead

With roughly 50 million adult Catholics in the United States, the stakes are high.

The voting bloc has long played a decisive role in national elections, often leaning Republican due to positions on abortion and marriage.

But experts warn this conflict could shift the landscape.

The president’s feud with the pope “isn’t going to help” with Catholic voters heading into midterm elections, said political scientist Ryan Burge.

Compounding the risk, Pope Leo remains highly popular, topping favorability rankings among global figures in a 2025 Gallup survey.

At the same time, Trump faces declining approval ratings, including a career-low 31% approval on the economy earlier this month, according to CNN polling.

A Divided Faithful

Among churchgoers, reactions remain raw and divided.

“He just feels he can say and do what he wants,” said Valerie Fodser. “He knows that people will push back against it, but he likes that pushback. He loves that pushback.”

Others are calling for restraint.

“The pope’s lane is leading us right as Christians,” said Sabina Hitchen. “I would say he could take some notes from the pope on kindness, taking care of our neighbors, and things like that.”

As the conflict continues, one thing is clear.

For millions of Catholic Americans, this is no longer just political drama.

It is a test of faith, loyalty, and where they stand when those two worlds collide.
