Ceasefire Between U.S. and Iran Shows Signs of Fracturing Ahead of Pakistan Talks

A tenuous two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran appeared increasingly unstable on Friday, just one day before scheduled negotiations in Pakistan. Washington accused Tehran of failing to honor commitments regarding the Strait of Hormuz, while Israel carried out strikes in Lebanon that Iran says breach the agreement.

There were no indications that Iran intended to ease its near-total blockade of the strategic waterway, a disruption that has triggered the most severe shock to global energy supplies on record. Iranian officials pointed to Israel’s continued bombardment of Lebanon — including what were described as the most intense strikes of the conflict on Wednesday — as a major obstacle.

U.S. President Donald Trump wrote late Thursday on social media that Iran was doing a "very poor job" of allowing oil shipments to pass through the strait. "That is not the agreement we have!"

In another post, he asserted that oil flows would resume, though he did not outline any specific U.S. response.

During the first 24 hours after the ceasefire — announced Tuesday by Trump — maritime traffic remained sharply reduced. Only one oil products tanker and five dry bulk vessels transited the strait, far below the typical volume of roughly 140 ships per day that previously carried about one-fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas.

Fresh Strikes Raise Tensions

Israel’s military reported early Friday that it targeted 10 launch sites in Lebanon used to fire rockets toward northern Israel the previous evening. It also said the Iran-backed Hezbollah group launched a missile toward Israel, setting off air raid sirens.

The projectile was intercepted, according to the Times of Israel. Hezbollah said it had targeted Israeli military infrastructure in the northern city of Haifa.

The United States and Israel maintain that the current ceasefire does not extend to Lebanon, where Israeli forces launched an अभियान last month alongside the broader conflict with Iran aimed at dismantling Hezbollah.

However, Iran and Pakistan — which brokered the truce — insist Lebanon is covered under the agreement. Iran’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, who is expected to lead Tehran’s delegation opposite U.S. Vice President JD Vance, said on social media that Lebanon and the broader network of Iran-aligned regional groups are integral to any ceasefire framework.

In a forceful statement Thursday, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei vowed retaliation for the conflict.

"We will certainly not leave unpunished the criminal aggressors who attacked our ‌country. We will undoubtedly demand compensation for every single damage inflicted," he said in the statement.

The truce, mediated by Pakistan, was reached just hours before a deadline set by Trump, who warned that failure to reach an agreement would result in U.S. strikes on Iranian infrastructure, including power plants and bridges, and the destruction of "a whole civilization."

Talks Set to Begin in Pakistan

Pakistani officials were preparing to host the first round of U.S.-Iran negotiations on Saturday, aimed at ending a conflict that began with U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran on Feb. 28.

Tehran on Wednesday unveiled a 10-point proposal outlining conditions for peace. The plan calls for Iran to retain control over the Strait of Hormuz, recognition of its right to nuclear enrichment, the lifting of international sanctions, and a broader cessation of hostilities, including those involving Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Thursday that while military operations against Hezbollah would continue, he had directed officials to initiate peace talks as soon as possible, including discussions on disarming the group.

"The negotiations will focus on disarming Hezbollah and establishing peaceful relations between Israel and Lebanon," he said.

A senior Lebanese official told Reuters that Beirut has been working to secure a temporary ceasefire to enable wider negotiations with Israel, describing the initiative as a "separate track but the same model" as the U.S.-Iran arrangement.

An Israeli official said Thursday that operations in Lebanon could soon be scaled back. U.S. media reported that Trump had urged Netanyahu to adopt a more restrained approach there.

Another Israeli official indicated that preliminary talks with Lebanon could begin in Washington next week. A State Department official confirmed that the United States plans to host the meeting to "discuss ongoing ceasefire negotiations."

Hezbollah lawmaker Ali Fayyad said Thursday that the group opposes direct talks with Israel and that Lebanon’s government should first secure a ceasefire before pursuing additional diplomatic steps.
