Chad Bianco seizes 650,000 ballots

A political and legal storm is intensifying in California after Chad Bianco seizes 650,000 ballots, a move that has thrust the state’s election system into a fierce dispute between local law enforcement and state officials.

The seizure, carried out by the Riverside County sheriff’s office, involves ballots from last year’s election tied to a controversial redistricting measure that reshaped congressional districts across the state.

Investigation Into Proposition 50 Vote Count

Chad Bianco, a Republican candidate for governor, said the ballots were taken as part of an investigation into allegations that votes were improperly cast in the election that approved Proposition 50.

The measure redrew congressional boundaries, a shift critics argue was designed to strengthen Democratic advantages — mirroring redistricting moves in Republican-led states such as Texas.

Bianco said investigators secured the ballots last month after serving search warrants on the county’s registrar of voters. A Riverside Superior Court judge has appointed a special master to oversee the counting process.

“This investigation is simple,” Bianco said at a press conference. “Physically count the ballots and compare that result with the total votes recorded.”

State Officials Reject Fraud Claims

Election authorities and California Attorney General Rob Bonta have dismissed claims of widespread irregularities.

According to reporting cited by officials, the difference between machine tallies and the certified results amounts to just 103 votes — far smaller than allegations raised by local activists.

Bianco’s probe gained momentum after the Riverside Election Integrity Team, a group of local residents, claimed a discrepancy of 45,896 votes between the final vote total and handwritten records tracking hand-counted ballots.

Bonta pushed back forcefully, saying there is no evidence of widespread voter fraud anywhere in the United States.

Accusations of Undermining Election Trust

Bonta, a Democrat, described the ballot seizure as unprecedented and warned it could erode public confidence in elections.

Over the past two months, his office has sent multiple letters to Bianco arguing that the sheriff’s staff is not qualified to conduct a recount.

In one letter, Bonta said the move was “unacceptable” and warned it sets a dangerous precedent that could deepen distrust in the electoral process.

Political Stakes Rise in Governor’s Race

The controversy arrives as Bianco campaigns in a crowded gubernatorial primary featuring more than half a dozen Democratic candidates.

California’s top-two primary system places all candidates on the same ballot, regardless of party affiliation, with the two highest vote-getters advancing to the November general election.

Last year’s redistricting initiative — championed by Governor Gavin Newsom — was approved decisively by voters. The measure was introduced in response to redistricting efforts tied to Donald Trump and Republican lawmakers seeking to secure additional conservative-leaning districts in other states.

Republicans in California, supported by the Trump administration, challenged the measure in court, but the US Supreme Court declined an emergency request to block the new congressional maps.

An Unfolding Battle Over Ballots

As officials prepare to recount hundreds of thousands of ballots under court supervision, the conflict has become more than a local dispute — it’s now a flashpoint in the national debate over election integrity and political power.

Like a locked vault suddenly thrown open, the seized ballots sit at the center of a battle that could ripple far beyond Riverside County.
