Charter Space $5M Seed Funding Fuels Insurance Push for the Space Economy

Charter Space $5m seed funding

Rockets get the headlines, but none of them leave the pad without someone underwriting the risk. Charter Space closed an oversubscribed $5 million seed funding round as it expands its insurance platform for the growing commercial space economy.

Who Backed the Round

Crystal Venture Partners led the round, with participation from QED, Blank Ventures, Gaingels, Hustle Fund and other fintech and space-focused investors. The financing brings Charter Space’s total funding to $8 million, following an earlier $3 million pre-seed round.

An “AI-Native” Approach to Space Risk

Charter Space describes itself as an AI-native economic defense company focused on insuring the space economy. The company said it has seen significant growth, including technology pilots with space companies and research organizations.

A Brokerage Takes Off

In May 2026, Charter Space launched its nationally licensed insurance brokerage, Charter Interplanetary Risk Corporation. The brokerage already serves more than 50 companies across the U.S. space and defense industrial base. It helps clients secure coverage across commercial business lines, as well as specialty coverage for space assets.

A Growing Backlog

The company said it has built a backlog representing more than $35 million in gross written premiums, a sign that demand for space-focused coverage is building faster than traditional insurers may be able to serve it.

Where the New Money Goes

Charter Space plans to use the new funding to expand distribution, grow its sales organization and scale its insurance product suite.

Coverage for Missions That Barely Exist Yet

The company is particularly focused on specialty insurance for newer mission concepts, including in-space servicing, space-based nuclear power and lunar in-space resource utilization. Its coverage strategy spans multiple mission phases, including pre-launch transport and testing, launch and post-separation operations.

The Bigger Vision

Charter Space said its goal is to give clients end-to-end coverage while expanding insurance capacity for companies developing increasingly complex space technologies. The company views insurance as a critical piece of the financial infrastructure needed to support greater investment and risk-taking across the space economy.

For an industry where a single launch can carry hundreds of millions of dollars in hardware, the companies willing to price that risk may prove as essential as the ones building the rockets.
