China Moves to Kill Meta’s $2 Billion AI Deal, Sending Shockwaves Through Global Tech

A high-stakes AI takeover just hit a wall. In a move that could reshape the future of cross-border tech deals, China has stepped in to block Meta’s $2 billion acquisition of Manus, a fast-rising artificial intelligence startup. The decision is already sparking alarm across Silicon Valley and Asia, raising fresh fears about tightening control, regulatory risk, and the growing battle over AI dominance.

Beijing Orders Immediate Withdrawal

China’s powerful state planner, the National Development and Reform Commission, delivered the blow on Monday. In a brief but decisive statement, it said the deal violated laws governing foreign investment and ordered all parties to unwind the transaction.

The message was clear. The era of easy global expansion for AI companies is over.

Markets Shrug, But Tensions Build

Despite the dramatic intervention, shares of Meta closed 0.53% higher on Monday. Investors may not be panicking yet, but behind the scenes, pressure is mounting.

This deal was never just about business. It quickly became a flashpoint in the escalating tech standoff between China and the United States.

Caught Between Two Superpowers

Even before China’s move, the acquisition faced intense scrutiny. U.S. lawmakers have already prohibited American investors from directly backing Chinese AI companies. At the same time, Beijing has been tightening its grip, discouraging Chinese founders from shifting operations overseas.

Manus found itself squarely in the crossfire.

The Rise of Manus and the ‘Singapore Escape’ Strategy

Originally founded in China, Manus later relocated to Singapore in what many call a “Singapore-washing” strategy, a workaround designed to sidestep regulatory pressure from both Washington and Beijing.

For a while, it worked.

The startup surged into the spotlight after launching a powerful general-purpose AI agent last March, capable of handling complex tasks like market research, coding, and data analysis. The innovation drew comparisons to DeepSeek, one of the most closely watched names in artificial intelligence.

Growth followed at breakneck speed.

Manus said it surpassed $100 million in annual recurring revenue in December, just eight months after launching its product. It claimed to be the fastest startup in the world to reach that milestone from zero.

The company also raised $75 million in funding in April last year, led by Benchmark, a major U.S. venture capital firm.

Meta’s Big AI Bet Now in Jeopardy

When Meta unveiled the deal late last year, it pitched the acquisition as a major خطوة forward in artificial intelligence. The company said it planned to accelerate innovation, bringing advanced automation into both consumer and enterprise tools, including its Meta AI assistant.

Now, that vision is on hold.

In January, China’s Ministry of Commerce of the People's Republic of China launched a formal investigation into the deal, examining compliance with export controls, technology transfer rules, and overseas investment laws.

A Meta spokesperson told CNBC that the transaction “complied fully with applicable law,” adding that the company expected “an appropriate resolution to the inquiry.”

That resolution has now arrived, and it is not what Meta hoped for.

Global Tech Community on Edge

China’s intervention is sending a chill through the startup world. Founders and investors who once saw Singapore as a safe gateway are now rethinking their strategies.

The crackdown suggests that even relocating abroad may not shield companies from Beijing’s reach.

A Warning for Future Deals

The broader implications are hard to ignore. Cross-border AI investments are becoming increasingly risky, caught in a web of geopolitical tension, regulatory scrutiny, and national security concerns.

Speaking on the sidelines of an international meeting, Chen Xu urged cooperation, saying it is “important that all parties act in a spirit of mutual benefit.”

He added, “if such an issue can be handled properly, it can help facilitate more substantive discussions in APEC.”

But for now, the message from Beijing is unmistakable.

In the global race for AI power, control is tightening, and the stakes are only getting higher.
