Chinese Cars Are Absent in the U.S., but Their Auto Parts Are Already Everywhere

A quiet transformation inside the American auto industry is raising fresh alarm in Washington. Chinese cars may not be sold on U.S. roads, but Chinese-made auto parts are already deeply embedded in vehicles Americans drive every day, creating a sprawling supply chain dependency that lawmakers now say could carry serious economic and national security risks.

The scale is larger than many realize. And it is growing fast.

A Hidden Network Inside American Cars

More than 60 auto suppliers in the United States are now owned by companies based in China, according to data compiled by consulting firm AlixPartners. Those firms produce critical components including air bags, automotive glass, and steering systems.

Overall, Chinese companies have accumulated ownership stakes in about 5% of 10,000 auto suppliers in America, according to the data.

“They’re deeply integrated into the industry,” said Michael Dunne, chief executive officer of the automotive-consulting firm Dunne Insights, which focuses on China.

That level of integration is reshaping how cars are built in the U.S., often in ways consumers never see.

Political Alarm Grows in Washington

Concerns over China’s expanding role in the auto supply chain have intensified in Congress, where lawmakers are reviving efforts to reduce or eliminate Chinese components in American-made vehicles.

A proposed Senate bill would ban China-made cars and restrict safety components such as air bags and seat belts.

In late April, more than 50 House Republicans led by Rep. Mike Kelly (R., Pa.) sent a letter to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer urging action.

They called for blocking Chinese automotive and battery companies from manufacturing in the United States, warning that their presence poses risks to domestic industries.

Supply Chain Dependence Already a Reality

Even as policy debates intensify, Chinese influence is already embedded deep in production networks.

Last year, a political dispute involving a Chinese-owned chip maker threatened to disrupt global automaker production, underscoring how quickly supply chain tensions can escalate into industry-wide risk.

A 2019 International Trade Commission study found that Chinese production of automotive parts had expanded significantly over the previous decade, with U.S. imports concentrated in smaller components such as brake rotors.

Automakers Begin to Pull Back

Some major carmakers are already adjusting their sourcing strategies in response to geopolitical pressure.

Tesla has begun requiring suppliers to exclude China-made components in vehicles built in the U.S., according to reporting last year.

General Motors CEO Mary Barra has said the company reduced its direct spending on materials in China for U.S.-made vehicles to less than 3%, part of a broader effort to localize supply chains.

Ford has also signaled cooperation with lawmakers on proposed restrictions.

“Ford said it looks forward to working with lawmakers on the proposed Chinese-car ban.”

GM, which has endorsed the Senate bill, declined further comment. Toyota also declined to comment.

Chinese Parts Already Inside Popular Models

Despite political pressure, Chinese components remain widely used across the U.S. auto market.

At least 40 vehicle models currently on sale include a reportable amount of Chinese parts, according to data submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Examples include Ford Motor’s Mustang GT, which uses six-speed manual transmissions from China.

About 15% of parts in Toyota Motor’s latest Prius plug-in hybrid come from China.

GM has reported that Chevrolet Trax, along with the all-electric Blazer and Equinox SUVs, contain roughly 20% Chinese-made parts.

China’s Rising Power Among Global Suppliers

The influence of Chinese suppliers is not limited to the United States. It is expanding globally at striking speed.

In 2012, only one Chinese company ranked among the top 100 global automotive suppliers based on revenue data from AlixPartners-owned Berylls. By 2024, that number had risen to 13. It is projected to reach 22 by the end of the decade.

“This shows the incredible speed in which the competitive environment has changed,” said Juergen Simon, a partner at AlixPartners.

Deep Ties With Major U.S. Suppliers

Chinese-owned firms now supply major American automakers across multiple critical systems.

Fuyao, a Chinese-backed glass manufacturer, supplies Detroit’s Big Three along with other U.S. automakers.

CATL is the world’s largest electric vehicle battery manufacturer, playing a central role in global EV production.

Nexteer, a publicly traded global steering and driveline manufacturer controlled by a Chinese conglomerate, supplies major automakers in both the U.S. and China.

Fuyao emphasized its U.S. presence and operations.

“Fuyao Glass America is a U.S.-based enterprise committed to localized manufacturing operations and the creation of local employment opportunities,” the company said, adding that it has strong relationships with major U.S. automakers. “Our localized supply and service network enables us to respond efficiently and promptly to our customers’ production needs.”

Perception Shift Inside the Industry

Not long ago, Chinese suppliers were often dismissed as lower quality or emerging competitors. That perception has changed dramatically.

“Now, they tell me whenever they lose, it is against a Chinese supplier,” he said.

The comment reflects a broader shift in the global auto industry, where Chinese suppliers are no longer just participants but increasingly dominant competitors shaping cost, quality, and supply chain decisions worldwide.

As lawmakers push for tighter restrictions, the U.S. auto industry already finds itself deeply tied to a supply network it may struggle to unwind.
