Dish DBS, the pay-television subsidiary of EchoStar-owned Dish Network, is reportedly on the brink of filing for bankruptcy as the company grapples with massive debt and ongoing subscriber losses in a streaming-dominated era.

According to sources cited by the Wall Street Journal, the filing could come as soon as this week, following months of restructuring talks. The move would affect Dish DBS, which operates the DirecTV satellite service, but EchoStar’s other brands like Sling TV, Boost Mobile, and HughesNet would likely remain operational.

The company has been struggling with $25 to $28 billion in debt for years, compounded by consistent customer churn as more Americans shift to streaming services. A restructuring agreement, backed by bondholders holding 82% of Dish DBS’s roughly $10 billion in debt, is expected to help reduce the financial burden.

This potential bankruptcy filing comes at a pivotal moment for the traditional pay-TV industry, which continues to lose ground to streaming giants. EchoStar is also in the midst of multi-billion-dollar spectrum licensing deals with AT&T and SpaceX, which could provide critical cash to pay down debt once closed.
