Barely seven days after Dolly Parton's death sent shockwaves through the entertainment industry and beyond, someone crept up to her star at 6712 Hollywood Boulevard and took a blade — or something sharp enough to act like one — to the very name that made the sidewalk sacred ground for thousands of mourners.

Video captured by KNX shows crews on their knees Tuesday, working meticulously to lift out the damaged terrazzo and brass and replace it with a fresh casting. The footage tells its own story: gloved hands, careful measurements, the quiet choreography of people trying to undo what one person tried to erase.

USA Herald has learned that the timeline here matters, and it matters legally as much as emotionally. Ana Martinez, the longtime spokesperson for the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, tells us Parton's star had already been flagged for repair — cracks had formed in the terrazzo well before her death, and the fix was penciled in for this Tuesday regardless of what happened over the weekend. That's the paper trail. It's the kind of detail that will matter if this ever becomes more than a police report — if, say, someone is identified and the question of intent, timing, and premeditation gets argued in front of a judge instead of just debated online.

But paperwork doesn't explain what fans found Monday night. Martinez says a visitor reported that flowers laid in tribute had been stolen from the star, and that the star itself had been scratched — not worn, not naturally cracked, but marked in a way that read as deliberate. That distinction is the difference between routine wear-and-tear maintenance and a criminal vandalism report, and it's one the Chamber appears to be treating seriously.

The Walk of Fame occupies a strange legal space. The stars themselves are owned and maintained by the Hollywood Historic Trust, a nonprofit that operates under agreement with the city, which means damage to a star isn't just an act against a celebrity's memory — it's damage to a quasi-public landmark, opening the door to California's vandalism statutes depending on the dollar value of the harm and who, if anyone, is ultimately identified and charged.

For now, no arrests have been announced. No suspect has been named. What's left is a community doing what communities do after a loss compounded by disrespect: showing up anyway. Fans have continued to gather at the site even mid-repair, leaving new flowers steps away from the tape and tools, refusing to let one act of vandalism define the space.

Parton's star was dedicated in 1984, a fixture of the Boulevard for over four decades before it became, this week, something else entirely — a pilgrimage site, and now, briefly, a crime scene. The Hollywood Chamber has not indicated whether additional security measures will be considered for high-profile memorial stars going forward, but the question is likely to follow this story as it develops.
