Pop superstar Dua Lipa is taking on tech giant Samsung in a legal battle that could have major consequences for celebrity image rights and corporate advertising practices.

The singer has filed a staggering $15 million (£11 million) lawsuit against Samsung, accusing the company of using her image on television packaging across the United States without her permission.

According to the lawsuit filed Friday in the US District Court for the Central District of California, Samsung allegedly placed a photograph of Lipa’s face prominently on packaging for multiple TV models, despite never obtaining consent from the global pop star.

"Designed to improperly capitalize"

Lipa’s legal team did not hold back in the filing.

Samsung's packaging was "designed to improperly capitalize on Ms. Lipa's hard-earned success to promote and sell Samsung's products", the lawsuit said.

The case includes allegations of copyright infringement, trademark infringement, and misappropriation of Lipa’s likeness and image, escalating the dispute into a potentially high-profile intellectual property fight.

According to court documents, the image in question was captured during the singer’s 2024 performance at the Austin City Limits Festival, and Lipa claims she personally owns the copyright to the photograph.

Fans allegedly fueled the controversy online

The lawsuit states that Lipa first became aware of the issue in June 2025 after fans began spotting her face on Samsung TV boxes and posting about it across social media platforms.

Some users even nicknamed the packaging the "Dua Lipa TV Box".

The filing highlights two Instagram comments as evidence of the commercial impact tied to her celebrity status.

One user reportedly wrote they would "get that TV just because Dua is on it," while another commented: "If you need anything selling just put a picture of Dua Lipa on it".

Those posts, according to the lawsuit, demonstrate how her image may have influenced consumer interest and boosted product appeal.

Claims Samsung ignored repeated warnings

The lawsuit also alleges Samsung ignored multiple efforts to resolve the matter privately.

According to the 30-year-old singer’s legal team, Samsung apparently ignored "repeated demands" to "cease and desist from infringing on her rights".

That accusation could become a critical issue as the case moves forward, especially if the court finds the company knowingly continued using the image after being warned.

A global brand powerhouse

Lipa’s lawyers emphasized that her likeness carries enormous commercial value because of her long list of high-profile partnerships with luxury and global brands.

The filing references collaborations and endorsement deals involving Puma, Versace, and Yves Saint Laurent.

She has also worked with Apple, Porsche, and Chanel, while recently becoming a global ambassador for Nespresso.

The lawsuit argues that Samsung unfairly benefited from the enormous marketing power attached to her global image and celebrity influence.

Lipa’s most recent album, Radical Optimism, was released in 2024.
