E Jean Carroll Issues Final Ultimatum To Donald Trump For Nearly Six Million Dollars After Supreme Court Ruling

The long and contentious legal battle between writer E. Jean Carroll and former President Donald Trump has reached a critical breaking point. With the United States Supreme Court declining to hear an appeal regarding a landmark jury decision, the legal landscape has shifted dramatically in favor of the plaintiff. Carroll and her legal team have now moved to force an immediate payment of the damages awarded to her, officially signaling that their patience for further delays has reached its expiration.

A Standoff In The Courtroom

Following the refusal of the Supreme Court to intervene in the case, the window for legal maneuvering has effectively closed. On Wednesday, federal Judge Lewis Kaplan granted a request from Carroll’s legal representatives to seek the payment on an expedited basis. This judicial move sets a strict deadline for the Trump legal team, requiring a formal response no later than July 7.

The situation marks a significant escalation from the ongoing back and forth that has defined this litigation for years. In recent court filings, Carroll’s lawyers articulated deep frustration with the defense strategy. They explicitly accused the Trump team of deliberately stalling the process. The filings suggest that the defense has engaged in a pattern of inventing or asserting new defenses every single time a previous effort to delay the case has failed to gain traction in the courtroom.

The Financial Stakes

The financial impact of this judgment has grown alongside the timeline of the litigation. While the initial jury award in the first case was set at $5 million, the amount has since appreciated due to the accumulation of interest. The total figure now stands at roughly $5.8 million.

Carroll’s attorney, Roberta Kaplan, has made it clear that the time for negotiation and delay is over. In a pointed Tuesday filing, she described the current moment as the end of the line for the defendant. She emphasized that Carroll had previously demonstrated cooperation regarding requests for extensions, but those days have come to an abrupt halt given the consistent refusal of the court to entertain the appeals.

Tracing The Origin Of The Conflict

To understand the intensity of this current demand, one must look back to the origins of the feud. The conflict began in 2019 when Carroll published an excerpt from her memoir. In that piece, she alleged that Donald Trump had raped her in a dressing room at a Bergdorf Goodman department store in Manhattan during the mid-1990s.

The reaction from Donald Trump was immediate and aggressive. He categorically denied the accusations, infamously claiming that Carroll was not his type and insisting that the encounter never took place. These denials became the foundation for Carroll’s subsequent defamation lawsuit, as she argued that Trump had severely damaged her professional reputation by branding her a liar for personal gain.

A Complex Web Of Legal Battles

The 2019 defamation suit was merely the first chapter in a much larger narrative. As the legal wrangling continued, the scope of the conflict expanded.

  • The First Case: In May 2023, a jury ruled in favor of Carroll. While the jury did not find Trump liable for rape, they did determine that he was liable for sexual abuse and defamation. This is the specific case currently associated with the $5.8 million judgment.

  • The Second Case: In 2022, Carroll filed a second civil suit under New York’s Adult Survivors Act. This case was sparked by a Truth Social post where Trump described her accusations as a complete con job, a scam, and a hoax. In January 2024, a jury awarded Carroll a massive $83.3 million in damages for this second case.

Trump has consistently appealed both decisions. His legal team argues that the trials were fundamentally flawed because the juries were permitted to hear evidence regarding historical allegations of sexual misconduct, which the defense claims prejudiced the proceedings.

The Response From The Former President

Despite the mounting legal pressure and the refusal of the Supreme Court to take up the $5 million petition, Donald Trump remains defiant. Shortly after the news of the Supreme Court ruling surfaced, he took to his platform, Truth Social, to denounce the proceedings.

He framed the lawsuit as a fake case and labeled the situation as weaponization and lawfare against him. Trump stated that he intends to continue fighting these claims with all of his power and strength. He further characterized the litigation as an attack on the United States of America itself, arguing that such a legal challenge should never be permitted to happen to a president or a candidate for the presidency.

The Road Ahead

As July 7 approaches, the legal pressure is mounting on Donald Trump to facilitate the payment. For E. Jean Carroll, this represents a significant victory in a years-long fight for accountability. While the second, larger case remains pending before the high court, the immediate focus is clear: the $5.8 million debt from the first ruling is now due. The legal team representing Carroll has expressed a firm position that there should be no further obstacles placed in the way of disbursing these damages, effectively closing the book on this specific portion of the saga.
