Elon Musk Alleges FEMA Spent Money in NYC to House Undocumented Migrants

FEMA Spending

Elon Musk, head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), revealed on X Monday that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) allocated $59 million to luxury hotels in New York City to house illegal migrants. According to Musk, this is a violation of federal law. And it also violates President Donald Trump’s executive orders.

On his first day back in office, President Trump signed an executive order temporarily suspending refugee resettlement and freezing federal grants and loans pending government spending review.

Although the courts later blocked the freeze, the administration has remained committed to stricter immigration policies and fiscal accountability.

Musk leads the DOGE, a temporary task force conducting a comprehensive audit of government spending. To comply with Trump’s executive orders, the agency is attempting to identify and eliminate fraud and wasteful federal spending.

“The @DOGE team just discovered that FEMA sent $59M LAST WEEK to luxury hotels in New York City to house illegal migrants,” Musk posted on X (formerly Twitter). “Sending this money violated the law and is in gross insubordination to the President’s executive order.”

Public Outrage Over FEMA Spending

Musk emphasized, “That money is meant for American disaster relief and instead is being spent on high-end hotels for illegals!” And efforts are underway to recover the misused funds saying “A clawback demand will be made today to recoup those funds.”

Critics have expressed outrage over taxpayer dollars being used to fund luxury accommodations for migrants, particularly when many states report that disaster relief efforts remain underfunded.

This is not the first time FEMA has faced scrutiny over migrant-related expenses.

In October 2024, former White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre denied that the Biden administration was using FEMA funds for migrant housing. However, in 2022, she indicated that the agency was assisting cities dealing with the migrant crisis.

Many Democrats are focusing primarily on Musk. He is being criticized as being a Nazi and claiming that he is looking for ways to make money from the audit.

NYC’s Migrant Housing Crisis

New York City, a self-declared sanctuary city, has struggled to manage the influx of migrants due to its policies limiting cooperation with federal immigration authorities.

Since spring 2022, approximately 230,000 migrants have arrived, straining city resources. To address the crisis, officials have converted upscale hotels into emergency shelters, including The Collective Paper Factory and The Row.

The Collective Paper Factory, a four-star hotel, offers a 5-star restaurant, gym, bar, and meeting rooms. Similarly, The Row, another luxury hotel, provides guests with high-end linens, pillowtop mattresses, bathrobes, slippers, minibars, and upscale toiletries.

The city’s Department of Homeless Services has reportedly secured contracts with local hotels to provide around 14,000 rooms for migrant housing through 2025.

Officials estimate that New York City will spend over $2.3 billion on migrant housing during the current fiscal year and the past two years combined, with a substantial portion allocated to hotel accommodations.

The controversy over FEMA’s spending comes during ongoing debates over immigration policy and federal funding.

Critics argue that sanctuary cities like New York should bear the financial burden of their policies, while advocates emphasize the humanitarian need to support migrants fleeing violence and poverty.

FEMA’s Broader Issues

FEMA has also been under fire for its response to recent natural disasters.

The 2024 hurricane season left severe damage in Florida, North Carolina, and Alabama, displacing thousands of residents. Many criticized the agency for its slow and inadequate response to these crises.

In November, FEMA launched an internal investigation after reports surfaced that a supervisor instructed disaster relief workers to avoid homes displaying Trump signs during Hurricane Milton recovery efforts.

The revelation that FEMA diverted $59 million in disaster relief funds to luxury migrant housing has sparked outrage and renewed scrutiny of government spending practices. As efforts to recover the funds continue, the scandal underscores ongoing tensions over immigration policy, fiscal responsibility, and disaster relief priorities.
