Ex-Newsom Chief Dana Williamson Pleads Guilty In $225K Fraud Scheme Involving Xavier Becerra’s campaign funds

Dana Williamson $225K fraud scheme

She was once the gatekeeper to the governor's office. Now Dana Williamson — the former chief of staff to California Gov. Gavin Newsom — stands convicted by her own admission, having pleaded guilty in federal court to a conspiracy so audacious it reads like a political thriller: draining a dormant campaign account belonging to one of the state's most powerful politicians, to the tune of $225,000.

The plea agreement, filed Wednesday, May 14, in Sacramento's Eastern District of California federal court, is the culmination of a financial betrayal that stretched nearly three years — and reached into the highest corridors of California government.

Raiding a Dormant War Chest

Think of a campaign account like a sealed vault — idle, quiet, accumulating dust while its owner serves in a different capacity. That is precisely what made it such an irresistible target.

According to federal prosecutors, Williamson and a network of co-conspirators allegedly orchestrated a systematic scheme to siphon roughly $225,000 from a dormant campaign account belonging to Xavier Becerra — California's former attorney general, current gubernatorial candidate, and at the time of the alleged theft, the sitting U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services under then-President Joe Biden.

A federal grand jury determined the operation was no impulsive act. Court documents allege the scheme unfolded deliberately from February 2022 through September 2024 — a 31-month window of calculated financial manipulation that continued even as Williamson held one of the most powerful staff positions in Sacramento.

What She Pleaded Guilty To

Williamson originally faced 23 federal counts — a sprawling indictment that painted a portrait of compounding dishonesty. In the plea agreement, she admitted guilt on the following charges:

  • Conspiracy to commit bank fraud and wire fraud
  • Subscribing to a false tax return
  • Making false statements to federal investigators

Under the agreement, prosecutors will move at sentencing to dismiss the remaining counts pending in the indictment — a concession that reflects the gravity of what she admitted to, not a diminishment of it.

Decades Behind Bars, Half a Million Owed

If the maximum penalties were stacked like a courthouse of bad choices, Williamson would be looking up at them for a long time.

On the conspiracy charge alone, she faces up to 30 years in federal prison, a $1 million fine, five years of supervised release, and a $100 special assessment. The false tax return charge carries a potential three additional years of incarceration, while the false statements charge adds up to five more years on top of that.

The financial reckoning is equally staggering. Williamson agreed to pay restitution in two directions:

  • $504,523 to the Internal Revenue Service — related to tax losses uncovered in the investigation
  • $225,000 to the victim (Becerra's campaign) — jointly and severally liable with any co-conspirators the court orders to pay

Under the plea terms, prosecutors will recommend a sentence within the applicable federal sentencing guidelines. The court will schedule the sentencing date.

A Fall from the Inner Sanctum

What makes this case seismic isn't just the dollar amount — it's the proximity to power. Williamson served as Newsom's chief of staff for approximately two years, departing the role in November 2024, just months before her plea became public record.

Few positions in state government are more consequential. A chief of staff controls access, manages information flow, and sits at the intersection of virtually every major decision a governor makes. Williamson wasn't an outsider exploiting a loophole — she was an insider, and insiders know exactly where the vulnerabilities lie.

A Cabinet Secretary's Forgotten Campaign Fund

Xavier Becerra's campaign account had gone quiet. The longtime California attorney general had ascended to the federal Cabinet, his political fundraising machinery essentially mothballed while he navigated the complexities of running the nation's largest health agency during a turbulent period in American public health.

A dormant account is not an abandoned one — and it is certainly not a slush fund for the taking. Prosecutors allege Williamson and her co-conspirators treated it as exactly that, moving money with the methodical patience of someone who believed no one was watching.

They were wrong.

What Comes Next

The Eastern District of California federal court will determine Williamson's sentencing date. The government has reserved its right to recommend a guideline-range sentence — and given the scope of the charges admitted, the guidelines are unlikely to be forgiving.

For Becerra, whose gubernatorial ambitions are now entangled in a federal criminal case bearing his name as victim, the episode adds an unwanted subplot to a political story still being written.

For Newsom, whose administration Williamson served at the highest level, questions about internal oversight will inevitably be raised — though no allegations have been directed at the governor himself.

And for the Eastern District of California, this case is a reminder that political fraud doesn't always arrive wearing a foreign accent or hiding behind a shell company. Sometimes it walks in through the front door, with a staff badge and a trusted title.
