CNN is under intense scrutiny after airing a controversial segment featuring ex-Washington Post journalist Taylor Lorenz, who appeared to sympathize with Luigi Mangione — the man accused of murdering UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. The segment drew criticism for equating Mangione’s far-left supporters as an example of far-left extremism without challenging the dangerous rhetoric.

Lorenz Defends Mangione: “Morally Good Man”

Donie O’Sullivan, the CNN host, interviewed Lorenz, who has emerged as a vocal supporter of Mangione. Mangione was arrested for the December 2023 killing of Thompson outside a New York City hotel during an investor event. Lorenz described the act as highlighting systemic healthcare failures and even expressed “joy” that the tragedy sparked conversations about the industry’s shortcomings.

“It’s hilarious to see these millionaire media pundits on TV clutching their pearls about someone stanning a murderer… as if we don’t lionize criminals,” Lorenz said on-air.

She described Mangione as “revolutionary, handsome, smart, and morally good.” These comments left many viewers and media experts in disbelief.

Media Critics Sound Off on Far-left Extremism

Fox News contributor Joe Concha labeled the segment “journalistic malfeasance.”

“The executives who greenlit this idea to give a lunatic like Taylor Lorenz a platform in primetime should be fired,” he told Fox News Digital. “And the host who nodded along… should be fired too.”

Heritage Foundation Media Fellow Tim Young echoed the criticism:

“It would make sense that a morally repugnant person would support another morally repugnant person,” he said, condemning both Lorenz and CNN for the coverage.

“This is the modern left — if they disagree with your opinion, they want you eliminated… I could never imagine wishing physical harm on them. It’s low, disgusting, and has no place in American society.”

CNN Accused of Elevating Far-Left Extremism

NewsBusters managing editor Curtis Houck slammed the network for giving Lorenz a platform without offering journalistic pushback.

He pointed to CNN’s omission of other violent incidents — including the assassination attempts on Donald Trump and the 2017 shooting of GOP lawmakers — as evidence of bias.

“O’Sullivan gave away the game concerning his hate-filled documentary by platforming Lorenz and offering zero pushback… to her dangerous slippery slope,” Houck said.

Lorenz Responds to Backlash

Responding on social media, Lorenz denied praising Mangione directly:

“I didn't even ‘praise’ him. I said that there are millions of Americans who view our healthcare system as barbaric and have made him into a hero,” she wrote on X.

In a separate interview, she acknowledged concerns about the “Free Luigi” movement and the growing acceptance of violent rhetoric on social media:

“Our system is violent… but in normal, healthy democracies, you don’t generally see people celebrating this kind of violence,” Lorenz told Fox News Digital.

Media Ethicists Weigh In

Jeffrey McCall, a media studies professor at DePauw University, criticized CNN for crossing ethical boundaries.

“Allowing Lorenz to drone on about [Mangione] being a ‘morally good man’ is quite another,” McCall said. “Functioning civilizations have to be able to settle things through debate, and to suggest that Mangione was just taking on the system is morally vacuous and disturbing.”

Legal Proceedings and Federal Charges

Brian Thompson, 50, was a husband and father of two from Minnesota. Following the attack, Attorney General Pam Bondi instructed federal prosecutors to pursue the death penalty. 

Mangione faces both state and federal charges, including murder “in furtherance of an act of terrorism.” He has pleaded not guilty at the state level, with federal proceedings still pending.
