Aliza Sherman

More than a decade after the brutal stabbing death of Cleveland nurse Aliza Sherman, authorities have arrested her former divorce attorney, Gregory J. Moore, in connection with her murder.

The indictment marks a major development in a case that has haunted Sherman's family and baffled investigators for years.

Arrest in Aliza Sherman’s Death

Gregory J. Moore, 51, was taken into custody in Austin, Texas, and now faces charges of murder, conspiracy, and kidnapping, according to the Cuyahoga County Prosecuting Attorney's Office.

His arrest comes following a grand jury indictment issued on May 2, 2025.

The victim, Aliza Sherman, was a 53-year-old mother of four and a registered nurse. She was murdered outside Moore’s downtown Cleveland law office on March 24, 2013.

This arrest is the first in the case, despite years of suspicion and previous legal troubles for Moore related to the investigation.

“This goal was designed to be achieved by causing Aliza Sherman to be unavailable to attend the proceedings due to serious physical harm and/or death,” reads the unsealed indictment, which outlines a plan to prevent Sherman from appearing at a divorce hearing scheduled for the day after her death.

“Through the tenacious work of multiple law enforcement agencies, evidence was accumulated that paints the unmistakable picture that Gregory Moore orchestrated and participated in the brutal murder of Aliza Sherman,” said Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Michael O’Malley.

Bizarre Motive

According to prosecutors, Moore’s motive was to derail Sherman’s divorce case. The indictment alleges that Moore plotted to kidnap or murder Sherman to obstruct her legal proceedings. Investigators say Moore had a pattern of delaying court dates through extreme means.

At the time of the murder, Moore was already under investigation for sending bomb threats to courthouses in a similar effort to postpone appearances.

In 2017, Moore pleaded guilty to inducing panic, falsification, and providing misleading statements to law enforcement regarding Sherman’s case. He served six months in jail.

The Murder of Aliza Sherman

The indictment provides harrowing new details about the day Sherman was killed. On March 24, 2013, Moore allegedly texted Sherman to meet him at his office at 4:30 p.m., instructing her to alert him when she was on her way.

Sherman waited outside the locked office in the cold for over an hour. As she walked back to her car, a hooded figure approached her from behind and stabbed her more than ten times in the neck and back, prosecutors said.

"During this time frame, an individual who was either Moore or an unknown co-conspirator approached Sherman ... circled behind her, chased her ... and then stabbed her over ten times," the indictment states.

Despite her severe injuries, Sherman was able to call 911. A Good Samaritan found her bleeding on the sidewalk and tried to help, but Sherman died at the hospital shortly afterward.

Prosecutors say Moore continued texting Sherman’s phone after the attack in an attempt to create false evidence of his ignorance about the incident.

Just days later, her divorce case was dismissed, and Moore changed the phone number he had been using for his law practice.

Search for an Accomplice

Authorities believe Moore did not act alone. Although prosecutors have not named additional suspects, the indictment notes that Moore had at least one accomplice.

Whether Moore or the unnamed co-conspirator carried out the physical attack remains unclear.

Sherman's estranged husband, Dr. Sanford Sherman, was never charged and reportedly refused to cooperate with law enforcement. He died in a Florida nursing home in 2023.

In 2021, the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation took over the case. The agency employed advanced forensic technologies, which ultimately uncovered evidence linking Moore to the crime.

“The Sherman family has waited over a decade for answers regarding their mother’s homicide,” said Prosecutor O’Malley.

Ohio Attorney General David Yost added, “Agents have spent thousands of hours applying advanced technology to help solve the murder case.” He also thanked the Sherman family for their “trust, patience, and confidence.”

What’s Next

As of now, Moore remains in custody and has no attorney of record. He is scheduled to be arraigned on May 16.
