A lawsuit that started with threats of a $1 million penalty just ended with the plaintiff owing the defendant a quarter million dollars instead.

A Washington judge has ordered the Kennedy Center to pay musician Chuck Redd $252,479.70 in legal fees, the latest development in a case the arts center brought against him after he canceled a Christmas Eve concert. Superior Court Judge Tanya Jones Bosier had already dismissed the underlying lawsuit in June, finding it amounted to unlawful retaliation against Redd. Monday's order set the price tag on that finding.

How a Canceled Free Show Became a Federal Case

Redd had been scheduled to host the Kennedy Center's annual Christmas Eve Jazz Jam on December 24, 2025 — a free show open to the public. He backed out five days earlier, on December 19, after President Trump's name was added to the building's facade.

That name has since been removed. In June, a Kennedy Center board member successfully argued the addition of Trump's name to the facility had been illegal in the first place — a legal victory that came the same month Redd's own case against the center was dismissed.

But before that removal, the center didn't take Redd's cancellation quietly. It accused him of violating its "morals clause," characterizing his decision to speak publicly about why he'd backed out as an attempt to hijack the public platform the center had given him in order to make a political statement, rather than deliver the concert he'd promised. The center further argued the cancellation cost it goodwill with the public, wasted marketing spend, and sunk costs tied to preparing for a concert that ultimately never happened.

The Kennedy Center's then-president, Richard Grenell, initially threatened to sue Redd for $1 million. The center later offered to settle for a fraction of that — $7,500.

Redd's Defense — and the Detail That Undercut the Center's Case

Redd pushed back on multiple fronts. He noted the concert had been free to attend, meaning there were no ticket sales for the center to lose in the first place. He pointed out he'd canceled with enough advance notice for the center to find a replacement performer. And critically, he noted he had never signed a contract to perform at all — arguing the only reason he'd been targeted was that he'd spoken out on what he considered a matter of public interest.

Judge Bosier sided with him entirely. In her June ruling, she noted the concert was free, so the center incurred no lost ticket revenue, and that the entire show had ultimately been canceled anyway because multiple artists — not just Redd — had also dropped out, meaning the center never incurred costs for staff or other performers regardless of Redd's decision.

What stood out most to the judge wasn't just the lack of damages — it was who got sued. Bosier specifically noted that Redd, the only performer among several who had spoken out publicly about the name change, appeared to be the only one the center chose to pursue legally.

The Fee Order

In Monday's order setting the fee amount, Bosier said she conducted a careful review of the billing records to exclude hours that appeared duplicative, excessive or unnecessary, arriving at a final figure of $252,479.70 that the Kennedy Center now owes Redd — payable within 45 days.

A Kennedy Center spokesperson said the organization intends to appeal the ruling.

Redd's Attorney Responds

Lisa J. Banks, Redd's attorney, framed the outcome as vindication for her client and a warning to others who might find themselves targeted for speaking out. She described the lawsuit as an attempt by what she called the Trump-controlled Kennedy Center to silence opposition to an illegal name change, and said the fee award reflects a broader principle — that no one should have to spend their own time and money defending against what she characterized as baseless, politically motivated litigation.

What Happens Next

With an appeal now expected, the case isn't fully closed. But for now, a lawsuit that began with a $1 million threat against a musician who backed out of an unpaid holiday concert has instead left the Kennedy Center on the hook for a quarter-million-dollar legal bill — a reversal that turned a dispute over a canceled Christmas Eve show into a costly lesson about who ends up paying when a lawsuit doesn't hold up in court.
