Fuel Shortage Fears Spark Travel Anxiety as Officials Tell Passengers Not to Cancel Flights

Holidaymakers worried about soaring jet fuel prices and growing turmoil in the Middle East are being told not to scrap their travel plans, despite thousands of flights already being cut worldwide and fresh warnings over fuel shortages in Europe.

More than 13,000 flights have been canceled globally in May as airlines grapple with skyrocketing fuel costs tied to the escalating Middle East conflict. The sudden cuts have fueled fears of summer travel chaos just weeks before the busy English half term getaway period.

But UK officials insist there is currently no fuel shortage in Britain, flights are operating normally, and contingency measures are already in place to prevent widespread disruption.

While the number sounds alarming, the canceled flights account for only around 1% of global air traffic. Flights in and out of the UK remain largely unaffected for now.

Data from aviation analytics firm Cirium showed Munich and Istanbul were among the destinations hit hardest by cancellations.

The Department for Transport moved quickly to calm growing concern among travelers.

"There is "no need" for people to change their travel plans," the DfT said in a statement.

"UK airlines buy jet fuel in advance, and airports maintain stocks to support their resilience.

"If your flight is cancelled, you have clear legal rights, including the right to a full refund or re-routing."

"We advise passengers to continue checking with their airlines before they travel, and to check the FCDO travel advice for the latest updates. You should also ensure you have appropriate travel insurance," DfT said.

Airlines Brace for Pressure as Fuel Prices Explode

Behind the scenes, airlines are racing to manage the impact of one of the sharpest jet fuel price surges in recent years.

Jet fuel prices more than doubled after the war began. One tonne was trading at $831 in late February. By early April, prices surged to a staggering $1,838 before easing slightly to around $1,500.

The spike has already forced major carriers to slash routes and trim schedules.

Air France, KLM, Air Canada, Delta and SAS have all reduced summer operations. Earlier this month, Lufthansa announced plans to remove 20,000 flights between now and the end of October.

The German airline’s finance chief warned that although fuel supplies were secured through June, contingency plans could include adding refueling stops on longer routes if aircraft cannot access fuel at their destinations.

Despite the growing pressure, British airlines insist passengers should not expect widespread cancellations.

Tim Alderslade, chief executive of Airlines UK, said "no flights are being cancelled due to fuel shortages".

"UK airlines are planning to operate their full schedules this summer, including the May half-term," he said.

Travel Industry Pushes Back Against Panic

Travel companies say many consumers are becoming nervous as headlines about fuel shortages and airline cuts spread across Europe.

But industry leaders insist the situation is far from a full-blown crisis.

Abta, which represents British travel agents, said that "planes are taking off daily and people are continuing to get away on their holidays".

"The government and airlines are clear that there isn't a problem with fuel supply. If you have a holiday booked in for the coming months – including the May half term – we expect it to go ahead as planned," added Abta chief executive Mark Tanzer.

Advantage Travel Partnership, representing smaller travel agencies, also said UK flights to "key summer sun destinations" remain unaffected.

Still, airlines are closely monitoring demand and profitability as fuel costs climb.

Chief executive Julia Lo Bue-Said said "airlines will be assessing poor performance flights and consolidating or cancelling as required".

But overall, she described the impact of the May cancellations as "marginal".

Consumer group Which? noted that airlines normally cancel around 2% of flights the day before departure under standard operating conditions.

Government Activates Emergency Flexibility Measures

As fears grow over what could happen if fuel supplies tighten further, the UK government has quietly introduced temporary emergency measures aimed at helping airlines conserve fuel and avoid operational collapse.

Under the new rules, airlines will be allowed to cancel flights weeks in advance without losing valuable takeoff and landing slots at crowded airports.

Carriers will also be permitted to merge multiple flights heading to the same destination on the same day, allowing passengers to be moved onto alternative departures to reduce fuel consumption.

At the weekend, Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said she remained confident most travelers would experience a summer similar to last year.

Alexander acknowledged there was currently no disruption to jet fuel supplies, but warned "this clearly is an evolving situation".

The government has also introduced a temporary rule change allowing airlines to group passengers from different flights together on to fewer planes to save fuel.

Middle East Conflict Raises Global Supply Alarm

The deeper concern hanging over the aviation industry is the growing instability surrounding global energy supply routes.

The UK imports roughly 65% of the jet fuel it uses, with a major share typically arriving from the Middle East.

But the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical oil and liquefied natural gas shipping routes, has dramatically increased fears over future shortages.

In mid-April, the head of the International Energy Agency warned Europe could face jet fuel shortages by June unless alternative supplies are secured quickly.

Some airlines are already trying to offset consumer anxiety by lowering fares.

Wizz Air and easyJet both said they do not currently expect to cancel flights. Wizz Air’s chief executive noted that some European ticket prices were actually falling as airlines compete to attract hesitant travelers.

Passengers Warned to Stay Alert

Travel experts say passengers should remain informed, even if there is no immediate reason to panic.

Rory Boland, Editor of Which? Travel, said package holidays offer greater protection because operators have legal obligations to assist customers if disruptions occur.

For now, Britain’s travel industry is projecting confidence. But with fuel markets volatile, airline schedules shifting, and Middle East tensions still escalating, officials are making one thing clear: the situation could change quickly.
